Fifth Grade Curriculum Guide

FIFTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

Mathematics

Fifth-grade math lessons at The Orchard School focus on reasoning and understanding and invite the students to share their thinking. Students are often asked, “What do you know?” and “What do you notice?” while building on their knowledge. Students keep their classwork, homework, and challenge work organized with math binders. Math journals are created and used as a resource for concepts and topics. The math curriculum is based on Common Core Standards. Fifth graders will grow as mathematicians by: • Using mathematics to solve problems. • Applying logical reasoning to justify procedures and solutions. • Designing and analyzing multiple representations to learn, make connections, and communicate ideas within and outside of mathematics.
