FIFTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Social Studies
Students in fifth grade at The Orchard School explore the geography of North America and the history, government, and cultures of the United States. Social studies curriculum is based on Indiana Academic Standards.
Fifth-graders will grow as historians by:
• Comparing/contrasting lifestyles of indigenous people based on their geographic location. • Understanding the ideas presented in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. • Understanding that some groups of American citizens have had to press for and continue to seek equal protection under the laws of the United States. • Understanding how our consumer choices affect the environment. • Relating current news events to historical events and documents. • Taking notes from oral and slide presentations. • Planning and executing short and multi-day projects. • Developing and presenting oral opinions.

• Indigenous people of North America • The age of exploration and colonial life • The Declaration of Independence • The Constitution • The Bill of Rights • Social justice leaders • Economic choices and environmental impacts
