Fifth Grade Curriculum Guide

FIFTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

Science

In fifth-grade science at The Orchard School, the focus is on creative thought, curiosity, problem- solving, critical thinking, and observing the world around us. In class, we discuss a variety of science concepts and test hypotheses through experiments and hands-on activities. Students use the scientific method to discover how the world works. They also practice writing scientific explanations throughout the year. Although each unit might be about a different topic, universal skills such as problem-solving and creative thinking are woven throughout. The science curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards.

Fifth-graders will grow as scientists by:

• Using the scientific method to test hypotheses and discover the world around them. • Creating and using models to explain the natural world. • Making observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties. • Defining a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. • Generating and comparing multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. • Planning and carrying out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved. • Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect Earth’s resources and environment.

Topics of Study

• Lab Safety, Scientific Tools, and the Scientific Method • Properties of matter

• Earth’s systems • Space systems • Ecosystems • Engineering Design
