Fifth Grade Curriculum Guide
FIFTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Spanish
¡Hola!
Fifth-grade Spanish at The Orchard School focuses on basic communication skills such as greetings, goodbyes, introductions, likes and dislikes, descriptions of self and others, and forming questions. Students build interpersonal, interpretive, and presentation communication skills through a variety of in-class and occasional homework assignments. We will also focus on technological use of the target language such as voice recordings, cultural videos, and digital study tools. The Spanish curriculum is based on Standards for Foreign Language Learning from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
Fifth-graders will grow as Spanish speakers by:
• Gaining familiarity with basic Spanish vocabulary and grammatical structures. • Giving basic greetings and farewells. • Forming questions to ask how someone is doing, where they are from, and what they like to do in their free time. • Describing themself and others by giving physical, location, and feeling descriptions. • Stating preferences, likes, and dislikes. • Making statements in the present tense to describe what they and others are doing. • Understanding basic spoken Spanish and following directions. • Presenting in Spanish to an audience of listeners. • Demonstrating reading and listening comprehension in Spanish. • Demonstrating proper pronunciation.
