Sixth Grade Curriculum Guide
SIXTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
English
Sixth-grade grade students at The Orchard School interact with both fiction and nonfiction texts, as well as novels that they choose. Students focus on narrative, informative, and persuasive writing while building research skills and analyzing the credibility of authors, sources, and materials. Throughout the school year, in both reading and writing, students focus on the themes of community, identity, self-journey, and perspective. The English curriculum is based on Common Core Standards. Sixth-graders will grow as readers and writers by: • Writing a small-moment personal narrative that includes a hook, dialogue, vivid detail, and paragraphing. • Writing a literary essay that states a claim about a character’s traits, using the text to provide evidence. • Conducting research and constructing an informative essay that provides information, and utilizes and cites credible sources. • Identifying themes, main ideas, and character traits in fiction and nonfiction literature. • Making connections to themself, the world, or another work of fiction or nonfiction literature. • Listening and presenting during class discussions. • Using text to evidence to defend viewpoints.
