Sixth Grade Curriculum Guide
SIXTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Mathematics
In sixth-grade math at The Orchard School, students focus on building a solid foundation in pre- algebra skills. A great deal of time is devoted to numbers and their operations with all of the skills and strategies involved in deeper thinking. Students work extensively with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Students are introduced to and start working with algebraic expressions and equations. Another significant portion of this math class is describing 3D objects’ and 2D shapes’ characteristics and analyzing their relationships. Students learn to use direct and indirect measurements to find perimeter, area, volume, and surface area. Throughout the year, students will learn about problem-solving, using the tools and language of math, and thinking mathematically. Students increase their understanding by participating in class activities, projects, homework, quizzes, and tests. The Math curriculum is based on Common Core Standards.
Sixth-graders will grow as mathematicians by:
• Communicating and collaborating mathematically. • Seeing the importance of math in everyday situations. • Developing and improving their number sense. • Modeling and using appropriate tools strategically to solve real-world problems.
• Applying and explaining multiple problem-solving strategies. • Collecting, displaying, and analyzing data to solve problems. • Being more confident in their mathematical abilities. • Having fun and enjoying mathematics.
Topics of study
• Number and number operations • Fractions, decimals, and percents • Ratios and proportions • Cartesian coordinate plane • Geometry and measurement
