SIXTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

Social Studies

Sixth-grade social studies at The Orchard School covers topics of history connected with the ancient world. Specifically, students learn how societies grew from hunter-gatherer communities into the large empires of antiquity. The focus is on the “classical” civilizations of the Mediterranean world, including Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Students also discuss how the world of the ancients continues to influence shared experiences of today. Social studies curriculum is based on Indiana Academic Standards.

Sixth-graders will grow as historians by:

• Discovering the connections between culture and the growth of civilization. • Examining how the past influences the experiences of the modern world. • Learning how to formulate inquiry-based questions related to topics of study.
