Sixth Grade Curriculum Guide
SIXTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Science
In sixth-grade science at The Orchard School, students participate in activities, science labs, and numerous hands-on projects. They examine the physical world that surrounds them. Students are exposed to concrete, abstract, and physical-world experiences to help them grasp various scientific concepts. Science curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards.
Sixth-graders will grow as scientists by:
• Using the scientific method for investigations and the design process to find solutions to problems. • Collecting measurements and using conversions to interpret data. • Understanding the Earth’s place in the solar system, relationships between celestial bodies, and the force that keeps them in regular and predictable motion. • Understanding that all organisms, including humans, are part of complex systems found in all biomes. • Understanding that all objects and substances in the natural world are composed of
matter in different states with different properties. • Designing and building a simple mechanical device.
Topics of study
• Scientific method • Earth and space science • Life science • Science, engineering, and technology
