Seventh Grade Curriculum Guide

SEVENTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

English

In seventh-grade English at The Orchard School, the focus is on moving from concepts to more abstract analysis, all while becoming better communicators. Through class discussions, independent reading, entire classes reading the same novel, and various written pieces, students draw connections between the books they read and the world around them. Students practice being open-minded, being willing to share, and thoughtfully responding to interpretations, ideas, and opinions throughout the year. The English curriculum is based on Common Core Standards.

Seventh-graders grow as r eaders and writers: • Developing the stamina needed to read for information and detail. • Using textual evidence to analyze, infer, and synthesize information. • Communicating clearly and effectively in writing. • Participating in and leading text-based discussions. • Using a variety of reading strategies to draw meaning from text.

Topics of study

• Independent reading and small book groups • Classes reading and studying the same book • Units integrated with social studies • Ongoing grammar instruction and practice • Vocabulary in the context of literature • Writing narrative, informative, and argumentative pieces
