Seventh Grade Curriculum Guide
SEVENTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Mathematics
Seventh-grade math students at The Orchard School study pre-algebra and algebra concepts. Throughout the year, students tackle problems that further their understanding of mathematical concepts. Students move from concrete to more abstract problems that require the application of mathematical concepts. These problem-solving skills serve students well as they advance in math and other areas of life. Students work at differentiated levels to best learn and grow as mathematicians. Students learn to express themselves mathematically and verbally and to defend their reasoning thoughtfully. Seventh-grade math focuses on the value of a mistake and how students can deepen their learning by understanding and learning from their mistakes. The math curriculum is based on Common Core Standards.
Seventh-graders grow as mathematicians by:
• Recognizing the importance of math and algebra in everyday life. • Applying multiple problem-solving strategies and algebra to different situations. • Communicating mathematically, both verbally and in written form. • Explaining their thought process and providing reasons to support answers. • Collaborating with those around them and participating positively in mathematical conversations.
Topics of study
• Fractions, decimals, and percents • Integer operations • Data science • Probability • Equations and inequalities • Applications using algebraic thinking • Linear equations • Geometry • Expressions and equations • Statistics
