Seventh Grade Curriculum Guide

SEVENTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL

Science

In seventh-grade science at The Orchard School, the question that students answer most often is, “Why?” They are frequently asked to think about why something is happening and to explain it using evidence and reasoning. Students are challenged to not only continue to learn scientific facts, but to apply those facts to a novel situation or use those facts to construct an argument. Science curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards.

Seventh graders grow as scientists by:

• Formulating good questions, fostered by curiosity. • Conducting a careful, safe, and methodical laboratory investigation. • Collaborating with peers to gather and interpret data from investigations. • Using collected data to support an argument or conclusion. • Analyzing the validity of outside data and arguments.

Topics of study

• Scientific method and basic laboratory safety • Newton’s Laws of Motion (forces, energy, and motion)

• Cellular function and structure • Body systems and organization

• Photosynthesis and cellular respiration • Engineering and the design process • Geological time scale and Earth’s changes over time
