Eighth Grade Curriculum Guide
EIGHTH GRADE AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL
Mathematics
Eighth-grade mathematics is an exciting bridge to high school. Students will primarily study algebra, while revisiting some topics from pre-algebra as necessary. Throughout the year, students will tackle problems that will further their understanding of mathematical concepts. These problem-solving skills will serve students well as they advance in math and other areas of life. Students are able to work at differentiated levels to best learn and grow as mathematicians. Math curriculum is based on Common Core Standards.
Eighth-graders will grow as mathematicians by:
• Recognizing the importance of math and algebra in everyday life • Applying multiple problem-solving strategies and algebra to different situations • Communicating mathematically, both verbally and in written form • Explaining thought process and providing reasons to support answers • Collaborating with those around them and participating positively in mathematical conversations
Topics of study
• Linear, quadratic, and exponential functions, equations, and applications • Systems of equations and inequalities • Arithmetic and geometric sequences • Absolute value • Pythagorean theorem • Use of function notation and simple inverse functions • Statistical analysis of one and two-variable data
