Turning Waste Into Gold

Making Energy to Green Hydrogen and Green Methanol

Proposal by

The Proposal

The project requires 2500 tons of mixed waste daily for a 75-year contract. The waste will produce around 50 MWh of energy per day, which will not be sold to the grid. The land should be provided at no cost, and the State must handle all licensing requirements. Under the financial arrangement, 10% of the total income will be shared with the State. Furthermore, the State's representative will have a seat on the board with voting rights based on the shares held.

Moving Forward

The 50 megawatt-hours of energy we produce daily will be utilized to generate green hydrogen and green methanol, specifically for export markets. Our commitment to sustainability extends to our water bottling operations, where this clean energy will be used, aligning our business activities with environmentally friendly practices. We manufacture concrete elements using a specialized cement mixture incorporating fly ash, with a maximum capacity of 11%. This approach enhances the concrete's strength and durability while promoting sustainability by reducing the overall carbon footprint and utilizing recycled materials.

Waste to Energy refers to the process of generating energy in the form of electricity or heat from the primary treatment of waste. This can be done through various methods such as incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and anaerobic digestion. These processes break down waste materials, primarily organic, into simpler forms, releasing energy that can be harnessed.

Waste to Energy: The Foundation

Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis, where water (H₂O) is split into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) using renewable energy sources. Integrating WtE with hydrogen production involves utilizing the energy generated from waste to power the electrolysis process. This provides a way to manage waste and generate hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manner. Syngas (a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and other gases) are produced in WtE. When renewable energy is used in the extraction and conversion processes, the extracted hydrogen is labeled as "green," aligning with global carbon reduction goals.

The Transition to Green Hydrogen

Methanol (CH₃OH) is an essential chemical in various industries, including automotive, pharmaceuticals, and energy. It is traditionally produced from natural gas or coal. Still, green methanol can be created by combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured from syngas directly from the WtE process. In this integrated approach, the hydrogen produced can be reacted with CO₂ in a catalytic process to produce methanol. This creates a valuable product and provides a means to recycle CO₂, thus reducing overall emissions. Green methanol is sought after for the container shipping industries.

From Green Hydrogen to Green Methanol

Waste Management: Converting waste into energy, hydrogen, and methanol helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, mitigating land use and pollution issues. Carbon Reduction: By producing green hydrogen and methanol, this process supports the decarbonization of various sectors, particularly transportation and heavy industry. Energy Security: Local production of energy, hydrogen, and methanol from waste reduces dependence on fossil fuels and enhances energy security. Economic Opportunities: Developing WtE to green hydrogen and methanol facilities can create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the renewable energy sector.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Transforming 2,500 tonnes of waste a day into energy is a practical and environmentally responsible approach to waste management. It helps manage waste efficiently and contributes to generating renewable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing environmental impacts. Understanding waste’s composition is essential before converting it into energy. Municipal solid waste (MSW) typically includes organic materials, plastics, paper, metals, and other inorganics. Waste will be sorted accordingly before entering the process.

The solution to the mounting landfills

Converting waste to energy and further to green hydrogen and methanol represents a promising pathway towards a circular economy and a low- carbon future. This approach addresses environmental challenges by harnessing waste as a resource while contributing to the global transition to sustainable energy. Developing and deploying such integrated systems are critical for meeting climate goals and ensuring a sustainable energy supply for future generations.
