School district plans for better reading scores

Every year the provincial government does tests on the reading, writing, and arithmetic skills of students in Ontario’s elementary and secondary schools. One school district in EasternOntario is doing very well in the overall results of the provincial tests but wants to see even better results as soon as possible. Trustees for the Catholic District School Board of EasternOntario (CDSBEO) received an assessment report from Brent Boivard, principal of curriculum, and Natalie Came- ron, superintendent of school effectiveness, on the results of the latest Education Qua- lity and Accountability Office assessments (EQAO). The EQAO tests and scores Onta- rio students at the Grades 3, 6, and 9 levels on their reading, writing, andmathematics Budget underway in Champlain DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca Champlain Town council held its first of seve- ral budget meetings this week discussing everything from light bulbs to floors. Each department of the township covered the proposed operating budget, as well as the capital budget for 2016. “Ideally, we shouldn’t budget for a deficit,” said Mayor Gary Barton. The total change in the 2016 budget is a 7.87 per cent increase if it is approved, with a tax increase for residents of 4.89 per cent. However, not everything on the budget will necessarily pass. There are still several bud- get meetings scheduled for the near future to discuss each section, and council must agree on a workable budget. In the three-hour meeting, council dis- cussed among other things salaries, bene- fits, the possibility of hiring a few people for different departments, the purchase of new trucks, and the possibility of changing the street lights within the township, as well as policing costs. Council members Troy Carkner andHelene MacLeod were among those who were not comfortable with the amount of debt lined out in this year’s budget. Although some departments had a lower bottom line this year, there were some whose costs have gone way up causing concern for some council members. Mayor Barton told each of the council mem- bers they had a lot of work to do over the next week before the next scheduled budget mee- ting on January 27 at 7 p.m. “You have a week of reflections,” said Barton. “You have some tough decisions to make.” Billets en vente pour le Banquet de la Francophonie Le Banquet de la Francophonie aura lieu le 2 avril au Centre Powers de Rockland.
