one time it also included branches in Vars, Grant and Embrun. The WI has existed for 115 years. Saunders said the purpose of membership is to do more for yourself and community, improving quality of life for family, friends, community and the world. WI is an advocacy group, and is responsible for things now taken for granted, such as pasteurized milk, railway crossing signs, lines on highways, mandatory stopping for school buses, comfort boxes to troops and for disaster relief, and wrapping bread, among others. They are responsible for recent initiatives as well, including labeling genetically modified foods, rural blue boxes, and advocating support of small local abattoirs. Locally they help at Navan and Russell fairs, decorate Russell streets, set up blood banks, support food banks and hospitals and participate in parades and community events.
RUSSELL | The North Russell Women’s Institute recently held a special celebration at Russell Meadows Retirement home honouring members receiving 25, 40 and 50-year membership pins as well as special awards. Irene Paul was the star of the show, with 58 years of membership. She reported that she had not received an award before in her life so she was very pleased and excited. The 50-year pins were received by: Irene Paul, 58 years; Joyce Cherry, 54 years; Ethel Hamilton, 52 years; and Marjorie Dugdale, 52 years. The 40-year pins were received by Baukje Bakker, 43 years and Shirley Otto, 41 years. Betty Dugdale received her 25-year pin and Life Membership. On hand was Russell Township Mayor J.P. St-Pierre, who presented the awards. Some councillors also attended. Shirley Otto, NRWI president, and Mona Saunders, Russell District president, welcomed everyone, who included family, friends, and members of other WI districts. Saunders congratulated NRWI for being of benefit to the community for 82 years. The Russell District, which includes Cumberland, Leonard, Navan, Russell Village and North Russell is celebrating its 80 th anniversary.
