Theyareresponsibleforrecentinitiatives as well, including labeling genetically modified foods, rural blue boxes, and advocatingsupportofsmalllocalabattoirs. LocallytheyhelpatNavanandRussellfairs, decorateRussellstreets,setupbloodbanks, support food banks and hospitals and participateinparadesandcommunityevents.

RUSSELL | TheNorthRussellWomen’s Institute recently held a special celebration at Russell Meadows Retirementhomehonouringmembers receiving25,40and50-yearmembership pins aswell as special awards. Irene Paul was the star of the show, with 58 years of membership. She reported that shehadnotreceivedanawardbeforeinher lifesoshewasverypleasedandexcited.The 50-yearpinswerereceivedby:IrenePaul,58 years;JoyceCherry,54years;EthelHamilton, 52years;andMarjorieDugdale,52years.The 40-yearpinswerereceivedbyBaukjeBakker, 43 years and Shirley Otto, 41 years. Betty Dugdale received her 25-year pin and Life Membership. OnhandwasRussellTownshipMayorJ.P. St-Pierre,whopresentedtheawards.Some councillors also attended. Shirley Otto, NRWIpresident,andMonaSaunders,Russell Districtpresident,welcomedeveryone,who included family, friends, and members of otherWIdistricts. SaunderscongratulatedNRWIforbeing ofbenefittothecommunityfor82years.The RussellDistrict,whichincludesCumberland, Leonard, Navan, Russell Village and North Russelliscelebratingits80 th anniversary.At Le Défi des chefs, compétition annuelle organisée par La Fédération Culinaire Canadienne (FCC) – Région de l’Est, aura lieu le 18 février prochain à Plantagenet. Pourunetroisièmeannéeconsécutive,La Binerie Plantagenet et La Cuisine Jean Bernard accueillent les chefs dans leurs cuisinesetcommanditentl’événement. Lesprofitsamassésservirontàoffrirune bourse aux chefs gagnants afin de leur permettre de participer à d’autres compétitions ainsi qu’à faire un don à un organismeàbutnonlucratifdelarégion.En 2011,lesorganisateursavaientremis500$à l’école intermédiaire Le Pavillon de Plantagenetet1000$àl’équipefémininede hockeyLightningClarence-Rockland.
