GETTINGBACK TO NATURE
A t our Daphne Street Child Care Centre in Prospect, there was much excitement at the unveiling of a brand new outdoor play space. The nature based play area replaces the centre's old plastic equipment, encouraging the children to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Centre Manager Brooke Spencer said the playground would help children learn to take risks through play. "Kids don't go outside to play at places like the local creek like they used to," she said. "There's a sector wide move in children's play to get rid of artificial play equipment and replace it with more natural play spaces." The play area incorporates a dry creek bed that runs through the space, with a blue stone boundary and surrounding shrubs. There's also a balancing log and tepee with jasmine that will grow up and over it. A mud kitchen and timer tap will encourage the kids to make the most of water play while also being water wise. Half a dozen trees have been strategically placed to grow and provide shade and seating has been built around the trunk of an existing large shady tree. The children love and are thriving in their new play area.
