The people of Drakenstein know how to savour the beauty of life. That is why weekends in our area are destined for fun and relaxation, basking in the sight of sunlit mountains and lush valleys. One way to soak up Drakenstein’s natural splendour and magnificent outdoors is to visit the lively Freedom Weekend Market. Located at Freedom Village at the Hartebeeskraal farm on the soon-to-be-renamed Freedom Road (or R301) in Southern Paarl, this market’s doors are open every Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can also pop in at the bar or deli at Freedom Village. The Freedom Weekend Market was established in 2019 and has since then thrived, despite the multiple challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Annelet Viljoen, founder and owner of the market, says running such a tourist attraction is “hard work”. However, the positive impact their market has on the Drakenstein community drives her toward success. “We have about 60 vendors, so our hands are full, but this also keeps us motivated because we can provide so many employment opportunities.” According to Annelet, all vendors at the market are curated to ensure they offer the highest standard of quality to visitors. A thorough interview is also conducted with each vendor. The market wants to foster a strong sense of community among everyone involved. “We aim to create a home f or people to sell their goods, as well as an inviting place where new and repeat visitors can enjoy themselves,” she says.
