Each January, TPT releases its Report to Community, a narrative that tells the story of the community impact of our work from the previous year. The report gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we have met our mission to “enrich lives and strengthen our community through the power of media.” You make this work possible. I invite you to read the report at tpt.org/report22 . January 2 will bring a change to our programming schedule. To better serve our viewers, we will begin offering general audience programming in the afternoons on TPT 2. Children’s programming will still be available 24/7 on PBS Kids, and some favorites — such as Antiques Roadshow and BBC News America — will now air in the afternoons on TPT 2. You can learn more about the changes at tpt.org/schedulechanges . There are many beginnings around the station in January. Legislative coverage begins on TPT MN on January 3. Jim Crow of the North Stories Connects Minnesota’s Past to its Present
In early 2019, we premiered a new Minnesota Experience documentary called Jim Crow of the North , which seeks to answer the question, “Why does Minnesota suffer from some of the worst racial disparities in the nation?” As the film explores, the practice of including racist, restrictive real estate covenants on properties in the early 20th Century — which has a lasting impact today, even though it was eliminated in the 1960s — offers one conclusive answer to that question. On Martin Luther King Day this year, we will premiere a digital-first series, Jim Crow of the North Stories , that uncovers this dark history of systemic racism, but also lifts up Black resistance and resilience in the past and the present-day changemakers bringing it to light and looking to right historical housing injustices. The four-part series of short documentaries is hosted by local historian Acoma Gaither. TPT members get exclusive early access to the first two episodes on Passport on January 9. Starting January 16, everyone can watch weekly episodes on the PBS Video App and on the Twin Cities PBS YouTube channel ( youtube.com/twincitiespbs ).

EPISODE 2: With a legacy of housing discrimination and systemic racism, what do reparations mean for MN? Following Free the Deeds, an artist-activist group working to raise awareness on the history of racial covenants in south Minneapolis through art, engagement, and the simple lawn sign, we explore reparations and the work it takes to prompt these majority-white neighborhoods to engage critically with this difficult history.
EPISODE 3: What are the real stories of Black homeownership in Minneapolis?
Free the Deeds not only wants to raise aware- ness of this history, but also to connect with the heart of the issue: what homeownership means to families. In this episode, we follow storyteller Hawona Sullivan Jansen as she sits down with two Black families who share their stories of homeownership in Minneapolis. We hear the contrasting tales of Black homeownership in North and South Minneapolis, and see how the arts can move people to think more deeply about this history.
EPISODE 1: How can a local municipality reckon with their past of racist housing and policing?
EPISODE 4: What is a land trust and how can it be a real form of reparations?
Since the release of Jim Crow of the North , activist groups have jumped into action in the Twin Cities and across Minnesota. One of the first was Just Deeds, a group based in Golden Valley, looking to raise awareness of their own city’s role in this legal segregation. Jazz musician Oliver Lyle shares his story of standing up to police harassment at the Golden Valley/North
What was the outcome of the hard work of these organizations? Host Acoma Gaither checks in with Just Deeds and Free the Deeds to talk numbers, including money raised for the City of Lakes Land Trust. We look at how the land trust works and how it is working toward housing justice.

He previously served on the TPT Board of Trustees, including as Chair from 2019-2020, and was instrumental in the search for TPT’s new President/CEO. LAURA LIU (middle) recently retired as the COO of College Possible. She previously worked as an executive with Capella Education Company and spent 18 years with Northwest Airlines, where she was the Senior Vice President of the International Division. MARK RITCHIE (right) is a former Minnesota Secretary of State. Ritchie was elected the 21st Minnesota Secretary of State on November 7, 2006. He was re-elected in 2010. He co-chairs the Minnesota USA Expo Bid Committee, serves as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Minnesota, and recently retired as President of Global Minnesota. Their service begins January 1, 2023. We are grateful for their leadership, skills, and passion. They will be pivotal as TPT moves toward achieving the vision outlined in the strategic plan released in January 2022.

Schedule Change Coming to TPT 2 in January 2023
To better serve viewers and increase general audience programming, TPT will be changing the afternoon schedule on TPT 2 starting January 2, 2023 . Our youngest viewers tend to watch programming through many platforms. Our adult viewers are more likely to watch television over broadcast channels, so increasing general audience content in our broadcast space is one way we can best serve audience needs. Children's programming will still be available from 6 a.m. through 1 p.m. on TPT 2, 24/7 on PBS KIDS SM , and on digital platforms. You can stream PBS
KIDS at tpt.org/kids, or watch over the air on channel 2.4 and through most cable and satellite providers. What to look forward to on TPT 2 From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., you will find a great mix of travel, history, mystery, and science. Programs—including Escape to the Chateau , Antiques Roadshow , Inspector Morse , and Nature —will become weekday afternoon staples. Beginning at 5 p.m., there will be a two- hour news block, with BBC News America and DW the Day leading into PBS NewsHour .

Enduring the Agony of Losing a Pet By Craig Miller
"Their characteristic traits represent things that we as human beings can only wish we could do," says Ellis, who is considered a "pet loss guru." "They're loyal to us, they trust us unabashedly. They don't judge. They can just sit there and be with us." Bang echoes that thought. "I do notice when I'm having a tough day, I feel her absence even more," she says, reflecting on the loss of Bastet. "She was always my comfort. She was just there to lay on me and love me." Another factor driving the intensity of feeling about our pets may be that grief is cumulative. "Grief is in a big box," says Margo Forbes, a psychotherapist in Novato, California. “Every time you have another loss, it brings up all the previous losses." For this and other reasons, loss of a longtime pet can be especially tough on older owners.
Nearly 20 years ago, when Sarah Bang (above) of Los Angeles came upon her cat, Bastet, it was a rescue. Bang, 50, says it was a "horrible abuse case," so not surprisingly, Bastet was a handful at first, sometimes requiring oven mitts to handle her. But last year, when Bang had to say goodbye to Bastet after 19 years of bonding, it was unclear who rescued whom.
"She taught me how to be human," Bang recalls.
She was always my comfort. She didn't ask questions. She was just there to lay on me and love me.
Nearly six months after Bastet (named for the Egyptian cat goddess) "crossed the rainbow bridge," Bang still mourns her feisty little Bengal. "The grief comes in waves," she says. “I'll hear the wind move the blinds and for a second I think it's her walking along the window." "Animals represent all that is good in this world," says Coleen Ellis, 57, executive director of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care in Southlake, Texas.
"I think it's important for people to stop saying, I know they were just a cat, or just a dog, or just a bird," Bang says. "She taught me how to be a human being and she taught me how to be selfless when it came to making decisions for her, because she trusted me to do that."

The Perils of Medical Portals By Jill Smolowe
When an email from a local medical practice landed with the subject head "Your test results are available," I ignored it. I knew these were the results of blood tests a neurologist had ordered to find an explanation for the callous-like sensations I've been experiencing on the bottoms of my feet. I also knew that whatever these labs had found, I was unlikely to understand either the numbers or the medical lingo. Better to let the results sit unopened until I met again with the neurologist in three weeks, at which time he could interpret for me.
new or unidentified condition can find themselves chasing down rabbit holes of needless distress. Reluctantly, I accessed my blood lab results. Yep, there was a particular bit of medical jargon I'd never come across before. Yep, I plugged the term into Google search. Yep, I scared the bejesus out of myself.
This one little phrase, it turned out, was linked to only one condition. A blood cancer.
Freaked out, I rushed the labs over to my internist's office and asked the receptionist to ask my doctor if I needed to consult a specialist. A half hour later the phone rang. "He wants you to see a hematologist," she said. [Waiting for my appointment], I had eleven days to wade through before I could learn what any of this meant. I would not wish those eleven days on anybody. They were filled with worry, speculation, dark fantasy and (stupid!) time spent combing the internet for more information. When I met with the hematologist, he pronounced the lab results "Weird," and said that while he was going to order more blood tests, he was "not concerned." I recently got the new results. The red flag reading was still there, but it had shrunk from a tiny fractional number to what the hematologist called a "smudge." He wanted me to come back in four to six months to repeat the tests so we can "keep an eye" on the situation.
I also knew that whatever these labs had found, I was unlikely to understand either the numbers or the medical lingo.
Medical portals feature test results laced with often scary-sounding jargon impenetrable to a layperson. While the ability to track an ongoing condition can be useful to patients who understand what they're looking at, those who, like me, are dealing with a
