HEADTEACHER'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents/Carers,

As the days grow shorter and the seasons begin to change, October reminds us of the mystery of time and God’s providence. Just as the leaves fall in preparation for winter, we are called to let go of sin, pride, and attachments that keep us from Christ. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome many of our families to the Year 11 and 13 ‘Strive for Success’ event last week. It is so important that parents are aware of the academic expectations at this crucial juncture of the GCSE and A-Level journey. When there is consistent positive collaboration between the college and families, positive results will flow. Thank you to all our staff who supported this wonderful event. This week, all our Form Tutors have been meeting parents in our ‘meet the tutor’ virtual event – a great opportunity to talk with the member of staff who is the first port of call for any pastoral queries. As we set the standard for another successful year, discussions focused on the basic expectations of the college, and the necessity to study independently for strong academic outcomes. To support this, our renewed homework policy and study provision will be launched by the October half-term. Further details to follow. On Thursday 2nd October, we have our annual open evening for Year 7 and 12 admissions in September 2026. The event will showcase the brilliance and warmth of our college to prospective families. The evening begins from 4.30pm and ends at 7.30pm. Further details are on our website. Several students will be involved in representing the college on the night as tour guides or in departments. Subsequently, we will close to students at 12.45pm on Thursday 2nd October, and re-open at 9.00am for a 9.25am start on Friday 3rd October. Everlasting God, may truth dawn on us with its light, bringing joy no matter what happens to us. Grant that we may not be blinded by the surrounding darkness. Shed a clear light on the new life that is coming. Keep us aware of the wonders that increasingly surround us, until all the pain on earth is finally overcome and we glorify your love and your great goodness. Amen.

God bless, Mr G C Mantillas

Dear St Joseph’s College Community,

Over the past few weeks, students in Years 7–11 have been reflecting on the Five Respects at the heart of St Joseph’s College: respect for faith, others, self, learning, and community — values that remind us each person is created in God’s image.

This week we also celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham, a sign of faith and hope reminding us that Mary always leads us closer to her Son.

On Thursday 25th September, our Headteacher Mr Mantillas, Mrs McIntyre, and Year 10 students attended the Beginning of Year Holy Mass at St George’s Cathedral, celebrated by Archbishop John Wilson. In his homily, he asked: “What does it mean to be a disciple of hope?” He reminded us that discipleship is lived through small acts of kindness, and shared the examples of young saints Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati, who showed that holiness begins with daily choices. Students from across the diocese echoed this message with reflections on inclusion, courage, and kindness, echoing Mary’s words: “Do not be afraid, God is with us.”

As this academic year unfolds, may we all take up the call to be disciples of hope — in our school, our families, and the wider world.

Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts… Forever. With every blessing, Ms Marie (School Chaplain)

The Art Department is delighted to share some exciting updates! Our first trip of the autumn term will see Year 10–13 Art students visiting Tate Britain on Thursday 10th October. This will be a fantastic opportunity to explore world-class collections and gather inspiration for their own creative journeys. Letters should be returned to Ms King or Mr Mbewe by Friday 3rd October — additional copies are available from the Art Department. Meanwhile, our students have been producing some truly impressive work. Year 13 student Caden has been developing powerful pieces on the theme of Architecture, while Year 8 students have been honing their skills by drawing our school buildings and practising one-point perspective. A special mention goes to Asher for an excellent effort!

On Wednesday evening, eleven of our Year 12 Science students travelled into London for an evening packed with curiosity, discovery, and inspiration.

Their first stop was the iconic British Library. While under-18s can’t yet access the vast collection of books without a reader pass, students were struck by the scale of the building and are already planning to return when they can make full use of its world-class facilities. The group then headed to the Francis Crick Institute to take part in the “Sip of Science” event — an incredible opportunity to meet and talk with scientists across all fields. From medicine and biology to data science and artificial intelligence, the students asked thoughtful, probing questions that really impressed the professionals. Topics ranged from the origins of the first cell to the role of AI in protein tagging, with our students showing real depth of knowledge and a passion for the subject. A highlight of the evening was the fact that all of the scientists they spoke with were women — a brilliant reminder of the strength of representation and a real celebration of girl power in science. With the Welcome Photography Prize winners exhibition as the backdrop, it was an evening that not only broadened horizons but also left students feeling inspired about their own future paths in science and medicine. Staff at the event commented on how engaging and insightful our students were in their conversations — something we are very proud of.

Year 10 English Students Inspired at The #Merky Books and HSBC Event

This week, a group of our top Year 10 English students had the opportunity to attend an inspiring trip to Brixton House, hosted by #Merky Books and HSBC.

The event, born from Stormzy’s vision to champion and publish Black writers, brought together a wide range of voices to inspire the next generation. Students took part in sessions on careers, finance, business, motivation and advice, with engaging presentations from advertising and PR companies, financial advisers, media and marketing professionals, and careers specialists offering insight into alternative routes beyond school. Our students also enjoyed hearing from motivational speakers, who encouraged them to dream big and embrace new opportunities. A highlight of the day included conversations with Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, who took time to speak with the group. Fuelled by delicious vegan patties, the boys embraced the challenge of stepping outside their comfort zones and did so with confidence, maturity and pride in representing the College.

The Power of Choices: Inspiring KS4 Assembly with Mr Williams

This week, Mr Williams delivered an inspiring series of assemblies to our KS4 students on the theme of ‘Choices’. He spoke about the power each of us holds in the decisions we make every day, reminding students that even a split-second choice can have a lasting impact on their own lives and the lives of others around them. The assembly also explored the serious issues of knife crime and gang violence, encouraging students to think carefully about the paths they choose and to recognise the importance of making positive, responsible decisions. It was a thought- provoking and powerful message that left our students reflecting on how the right choices can open doors to brighter futures.
