The central question of the study is: how do state structure and the relationship between its networks and institutions influence the rise of populist movements. The study concludes that authoritarian regimes are not the only systems of governance that act as a breeding ground for populism, but so are democratic regimes. The failures of local and economic policies, polarizing media outlets provide an atmosphere focused on stories that feed populist narratives, including those related to migration.
