PERRY MASON, FOOTBALL, AND MY DAD WHY I BECAME A LAWYER WHO FIGHTS FOR THE UNDERDOG

It’s no surprise that I became a lawyer. Growing up in the small town of Shelby, North Carolina, I was starry-eyed and in awe of Perry Mason when he would defend his wrongfully accused client. His passion for his clients was matched by an equally staunch desire to see justice swing in favor of the public, and my dad and I would watch anxiously each week as he called out the real criminal on the witness stand. As we watched, I remember my dad saying that our family needed its own mouthpiece. And so, the seed to become a lawyer was planted by Perry Mason. My father supplied the dirt, and football gave it the nutrients it needed to grow.

I’ve always been

someone who cheered for the underdog. Maybe

this stems from my days of watching Perry Mason defend someone the public had already deemed guilty or

my years of fighting on the football field. But I don’t back down from a challenge. During my time as a probation officer, I had seen too

Football has taken me a long way, and for a few years, it gave me a career in the NFL and the briefly tenured World Football League. But it’s the values and the lessons that playing a tough and gritty team sport like football taught me that carried me to where I am today. On the field, you have some superstars who shine brighter than others, but if you’re doing it right, everyone is a star. I consider my team at Don Turner Legal Team my own family of stars, and I know I can trust them to put up the best fight for our clients.

many injustices. This made me realize that many people

were real, honest, and good, and they deserve a fighting chance in court. Sadly, as I’ve been doing more personal injury cases, I’ve noticed the civil courts need this kind of help as well. It was Vince Lombardi who once famously said, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” All my years in legal practice have taught me that winning is a big part of the

law, but you can also win when you lose a case. As long as you give your best fight to prove innocence or for proper compensation for your client, you’re showing that you can fight like a winner. We cannot predict the outcome of the law,

Prior to hanging my own shingle as the Don Turner Legal Team, and after my short stint on the football field, I became a probation officer. My time working in probation was filled with nightly law school classes, and after graduating law school, I took and passed the bar. I opened my own office with another gentleman I knew, and I began accepting court-appointed cases. While I was practicing, I continued my training and education. Like I had done all those years in football, I knew I wasn’t done rehearsing my craft.

but we can do our best to do all we can for those who trust us to find solutions during the trying times in their lives. That’s exactly what Perry Mason taught me to do, and what the Don Turner Legal Team continues to do for every client that walks in the door.

CHI CHI THE RESCUE DOG

A QUADRUPLE AMPUTEE WHO INSPIRES THE WORLD

Auto insurance can be one of the most important insurance policies you can buy. All states require some form of auto insurance, and these policies help you pay for unexpected expenses after accidents. Understanding what kind of coverage you need and what options are available can be complicated and confusing. Arm yourself with the following knowledge about auto insurance and be better prepared next time you hit the road. UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU NEED AND HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF AUTO INSURANCE 101 “She stole my heart,” Howell said, taken by how Chi Chi was still wagging her tail despite her injuries. After seeing Chi Chi’s perseverance and her will to live, Elizabeth and her family took on the challenge. There were struggles as Chi Chi learned to trust people again, but with time, Chi Chi found peace and joy with her new family. In Georgia, policy holders must follow the 25/50/25 rule. This means drivers and their vehicles must be covered with $25,000 per person bodily injury liability, $50,000 to cover multiple drivers, and $25,000 for property damage liability. Georgia drivers are not allowed to drive without proof of insurance, and insurance companies must file each policy with the Georgia Electronic Insurance Compliance System. Law enforcement and other agencies use this database when checking drivers’ legality, such as when a police officer pulls you over. Failure to abide by these laws leaves drivers susceptible to fines and penalties, such as a license suspension and limits on registering new vehicles. Additionally, being uninsured leaves you In our darkest moments, it can be hard to believe joy can be found again. But one amazing dog proves that no matter what happens, through love and patience, we can make the world a better place. Chi Chi is a golden retriever who was found in a dumpster by an animal rescue group in South Korea. Badly injured and left in a garbage bag with her legs bound together, the only way to save Chi Chi’s life was to amputate all four of her legs. As she recovered, the call went out to find a family who could care for a dog with serious medical needs. As a quadruple amputee, just getting Chi Chi’s prosthetics on so she could go outside in the morning would be time-consuming. Fortunately, Elizabeth Howell from Arizona saw a video about Chi Chi’s plight online. WHAT DO I NEED?

“She exemplifies resilience and forgiveness and willingly shares her love and compassion in abundance,” Howell has said. “Her sweet-

tempered and gentle spirit opens people’s hearts and her perceptive spirit senses where her love is needed.”

Chi Chi’s vet has called her a “miracle dog,” referring both to the fact that she survived losing all her legs and to the joy she brings to the world. Today, Chi Chi is a registered therapy dog, offering strength, love, and support to those who need it most. She visits VA hospitals, assisted living facilities, and children with disabilities. To celebrate her journey of survival, courage, and love, Chi Chi was honored with the American Humane Hero Dog Award in 2018. at risk for a lawsuit and more out-of-pocket payouts should you be at-fault for an accident.

WHAT ABOUT ADDITIONAL PROTECTION?

Because some drivers cruise the Peach State’s roadways without insurance, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage is designed to protect those with insurance should they get in an accident with drivers who have little or no insurance. These programs require your insurance company to pay out the remaining deficit of accident costs left by uninsured or underinsured motorists should they be at-fault for an accident. This costs more than regular insurance, but it’s an extra step toward getting you the compensation you deserve. We always recommend our clients have at least a $100,000 uninsured/ underinsured motorist policy to protect themselves. While auto insurance is always a safe and smart protection plan to have, most insurance companies place higher value on making money than providing fair compensation for injuries and claims. WHAT SHOULD YOU GATHER AFTER YOUR ACCIDENT?

DOCUMENTING YOUR CASE

Few things in life are as jarring and stressful as recovering from an accident, especially when you aren’t at-fault. You’re not alone; millions of Americans land in the hospital after accidents that are not their fault each year. Compensation is available for victims involved in a variety of accidents, but how much compensation someone receives can depend on the facts and documents available in a case. Your first goal when you’re involved in an accident is to get better. Focusing on your physical and mental well-being will set you up for success as you try to move past your accident. But your second goal should always be to collect the proper evidence and documents you need to win a fair claim and case. Gather any documents relating to your case — including doctors’ notes, police reports, scene and injury photos, and damage reports — and give them to your lawyer. If you’re able, collect witness contact information, and record your own recollection of what happened on your phone’s voice or video recorder. As you progress with your healing, continue to document any extra procedures, roadblocks, and healing updates. This will establish a basis for the extent of your injury. Insurance companies may request a statement from you, which could both hinder or benefit your claim. You should only talk to an insurance company with the assistance of a lawyer, who can

prepare you for the company’s questions and possible outcomes. Just

like when speaking to the police, keep

your answers concise and stick to the facts. Furthermore, you should never divulge information regarding medical damages, but you should keep a record of all your correspondence with the insurance company. If you’re too compromised or injured to do these kinds of tasks, police officers will be documenting the scene and creating police reports, while 911 operators will have an accurate log of the request for help. These may become vital as you fight for compensation. A personal injury lawyer will give you the best chance of getting the compensation you deserve, and the documents you collect for them will only help you. Going into the 1999 NFL season, no one expected anything from the St. Louis Rams. When starting quarterback Trent Green went down with a gruesome knee injury in the preseason, ESPN The Magazine slated the Rams to be the worst team in the NFL that year. With few options, coach Dick Vermeil named a virtually unknown player as his new starting quarterback, humbly stating in a press conference, “We will rally around Kurt Warner, and we’ll play good football.” Five years before his start, 22-year-old Kurt Warner was stocking shelves at a grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for $5.50 an hour. He had amassed 16 snaps in the NFL prior to taking the reins for the 1999 season, and what proceeded to transpire on the field was utter pandemonium, giving the Rams the nickname “The Greatest Show on Turf.” This improbable season set the stage for one of the most dramatic games in Super Bowl history. After scoring 16 unanswered points against the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, the Rams looked poised to coast to the Lombardi Trophy, but the Titans had different plans. runs, and a field goal brought the Titans level at 16– 16, with just over two

minutes of play remaining. In response, Warner found receiver Isaac Bruce for a 73-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 23–16 with 1:54 left on the clock. But the Titans weren’t done. Quickly moving the ball down the field, Titans quarterback Steve McNair found himself with a third and 5 inside the Rams 30-yard line with 22 seconds left. Scrambling around and fighting off two players trying to pull him down, McNair threw the ball to Kevin Dyson at the 10-yard line. A quick timeout left six seconds on the clock, and the Titans were one play away from tying the game. On the next play, McNair found Dyson on a quick slant, and when he caught the ball at the 4-yard line, it appeared a touchdown was imminent. Suddenly, linebacker Mike Jones wrapped the receiver at the hips. Dyson extended his arm, but when he hit the AstroTurf, he was 1 yard short of the goal line. The Rams had pulled off the impossible, earning their first Super Bowl title ever.
