Solar power in the style of a roof tile. That’s sm art.
Solar power without panels. That’s sm art.
The Generon Smart Roof. Makes solar homes show homes.
Sustainable ways of living is a responsibility we all must embrace if we are going to effectively impact the growing Climate crisis. How we generate our energy is central to this. Roof top solar power is now installed in over 900,000 UK homes, supplying abundant quantities of naturally generated, low-cost clean electricity to meet or even exceed the needs of an average family.
And whereas solar technology has evolved in recent years, there is now a new standard which is set to transform how we view and install solar in residential new homes. Welcome to Breedon Generon, a unique masterpiece of innovation, and truly a work of art. A whole roof concept, Generon uses standard size concrete roof tiles with discreetly integrated PV cells to create a beautiful energy-generating roof without compromising aesthetics. And whereas Generon presents a new and unique solar solution capable of generating all the clean electricity a typical house would ever need, it is installed like standard roof tiles, by professional roofing contractors.
The benefits are easy to see.
Of course, the most obvious advantage of Generon is its appearance. With the high efficiency photovoltaic cells cleverly integrated into each concrete tile, the overall look is seamless, and virtually like a normal roof. So whether you’re a homeowner, architect or developer, if you’re creating a new-build or re-roofing an existing property you get all the benefits of solar power – improved sustainability, lower energy bills and satisfying the latest energy-saving Building Regulations – without having to compromise on style and visual appeal. It’s what makes Generon the smart choice for our next generation energy efficient homes.
The less obvious benefits.
Aside from the aesthetics, Generon offers a host of other benefits: • Premium quality components, manufactured in Europe’s only dedicated roof tile PV facility. • Manufactured using standard, high quality Breedon roof tiles, and is installed alongside matching Breedon roof tiles. • No holes in the roof, so waterproofing integrity isn’t compromised. • Meets key safety and CRT performance standards. • Total flexibility – If required, ancillary products such as inverters and batteries are also available from Generon to provide a one-stop-shop PV solution. • Quick, easy and economical to install by roofing contractors using standard roofing fittings. • Incorporates everything you need from the outset, the system is fully compatible with standard roofing materials. • Can form part of a wider renewable energy solution e.g. inverter, cabling, battery storage, EV charge point and heat source pumps. • Increases the sales appeal and resale value of the property. • Helps to comply with latest Part L Building Regulations, for the conservation of heat and power.
Hungary
A new generation of solar power. Generon offers something no other solar energy system can – the convenience of roof-based power generation combined with an attractively sleek and smart look. The tiles themselves bring together common elements to create a discreet and elegant component, ready to be incorporated alongside standard roof tiles into the roof.
A typical 4KW roof system would need 260 Generon Solar Tiles (24m 2 ) integrated within the overall CRT roof layout, but once installed they’re barely visible to the naked eye. It also features a dedicated app, allowing homeowners to track real-time data on the system’s energy production on their smartphone. You can be sure of Generon’s reliability too. The system has been developed by Breedon and Terran – two of Europe’s leading tile manufacturers – and carries a 20-year Performance Guarantee.
• 400mm (4mm 2 ) cable, connected in series • 3.2mm monocrystalline tempered glass PV panel • 330 x 420mm premium thin edge concrete roof tile base
Solar energy made simple.
Generon has one other major benefit over most solar power systems – no specialist PV installer is needed. That’s because the tiles are fitted in exactly the same way and at the same time as standard roof tiles by a builder or roofing contractor, and once laid each tile simply plugs into the next. Electrical connections to the inverter can then be simply carried out by an electrician on-site.
1. Generon tiles are laid in sequence and interlocked with the compatible Breedon Elite CRT.
2. The Generon solar tiles are fitted on spaced battens with a minimum 7.5cm ventilation gap to ensure optimum temperature control.
3. Generon tiles shouldn’t be drilled or screwed; instead, storm clips are used to fix them in place.
4. Each tile is fitted with a weatherproof junction box and interconnecting cables – the positive terminal simply connects to the negative terminal of the adjoining tile.
5. The final positive and negative terminals are the only two cables that pass through the roof felt to be connected to the inverter.
6. The end result is a seamlessly integrated solar roof, combining unrivalled aesthetics with optimum solar PV performance.
Generon. All the answers... With a unique, ground-breaking innovation like Generon solar tiles, it’s only natural to have a few questions. So here we’ve compiled those we’re most commonly asked, to help you find out all you need to know about the new generation in solar power.
Will my roof be suitable for Generon? Generon is best fitted as part of a whole roof, so if you’re building a new property or refurbishing an existing one, as long as it has a minimum roof angle of 20˚ it should be easy to incorporate the system. Does it need to be south-facing? No. The system will be most effective on the south- facing elevation, but east or west are also perfectly suitable – and you don’t need sun every day for it to generate sufficient electricity. Can the entire roof area be used? At the edges of the roof surface and the roof structure, at least two roof tiles (approx. 60 cm) must be left free. These areas must be covered with the compatible Breedon Elite roof tiles.
If a single tile stops working, does it affect the whole system?
No. There’s a bypass diode in each tile that prevents the whole system from going down. The interconnecting cables are designed so that they cannot be fitted in the wrong sequence, leaving it extremely rare for tiles to fail during operation. In such cases, the faulty tile can be located either by testing each tile or using a drone with a thermal camera.
Is it better to have a few long rows of tiles, or more short rows?
There’s no difference as long as the overall area is the same. Positioning should be based on the location of the inverter to make connections easier and lead lengths shorter, and the end tile should align with the starting tile. Does an electrician have to carry out all the connections? T he roofing contractor can make all the basic connections between the tiles, with a qualified electrician making the final measurements, connecting to the inverter and carrying out any necessary tests.
