HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

It has been wonderful to welcome back pupils to school after the half term break and hear all about the adventures pupils had on the Boppard trip, Maths PGL and personal holidays. I hope everyone had a chance to relax during the break, particularly our Year 11 and 13s who have continued with their

exams. This week has been exciting for our Year 10 pupils as not only did our Geography students enjoy taking part in fieldwork in Teddington but we also had 25 pupils joining us in school from Washington High School in Taiwan. Each girl was assigned a Waldegrave buddy who showed them around our school. We said farewell at a special assembly today but it was not all tears as this afternoon we welcomed members of the European Youth Orchestra. These visitors from across Europe will be practising and performing in support of the Richmond borough European twinning reaffirmation celebrations this weekend. I look forward to seeing the concert on Sunday as well as hearing from our Year 9 students next week about how they get on with their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. I wish them all the best of luck and clear skies! On a final point I would like to thank everyone who has so far contributed to help raised over £2,000 towards the £30,000 target of the Friends of Waldegrave Minibus appeal. If you would like to make a donation to support the school please look for the Minibus appeal on ParentPay. Thank you, have a lovely weekend and best wishes to those celebrating Eid over the next few days.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

info@waldegravesch.org STAY CONNECTED WITH US:

As we enter June and make our way towards Midsummer’ Day, the long and light evenings can help us feel happier and more optimistic. While this week’s weather is trying quite hard to undermine this optimism, there is little doubt that small things can have a big impact on our mood. This month the organisation Action for Happiness is reminding us to appreciate the little things that can keep us feeling positive. They have created a ‘Joyful June’ calendar and today’s tip is to get out into green space and feel the joy that nature brings, which can help us to reframe the rain and remember that it is invigorating our green spaces. Over the next week, other tips include: doing something healthy, doing acts of kindness for others, and expressing gratitude. Sunday’s tip is finding joy in music, which happily coincides with the European Youth Orchestra’s performance at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington! The full Action for Happiness ‘Joyful June’ calendar with tips to remind you to look for what is good in life can be found here and below is a link to a useful video explaining the links between joy and resilience. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

We are now back for our final half term of this academic year. There have been lots of school trips for Year 10 recently, including abroad trips to Paris and Germany as well as Geography field trips going on this week. A group of Year 10 students were also selected to buddy up with our Taiwanese students who are with us for this week through our partner school. They are attending classes with Year 10 enabling them to gain experience of what a UK school is like. Well done to all of the Year 10 students who have been so welcoming and helpful to our visitors. Before half term we selected our new house captains. Well done to all of the students that applied for this. It was an incredibly hard decision and all the Year 10s that applied should be very proud of themselves. Congratulations to our new house captains for next year: Megan C, Ava S, Jasmine G, Matilda T, Isabelle E, Siyana C, Holly C, Pia H, Rosalie ST, Imogen C, Mia W, Imogen B, Betty J, Ugochi A, Betty J, Alexa M and Grace HJ. The application process for Head Girl will be starting shortly. We encourage all of our students to come to school wearing the correct uniform. To support students to make the correct choices around this, uniform detentions are now being given during lunchtimes for those not wearing the correct uniform. These take place between 12:30 - 12:50 allowing students time to get lunch afterwards. A reminder that Year 10 should be wearing their lanyards at all times. Thank you for your support with this at home. Year 10 exams are from Monday 16th - Friday 27th June. The week after that will be work experience. Have a lovely weekend!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls

Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!

Year 7/8 Rounders v Hampton High

On Tuesday our Year 7/8 Rounders Team played away against Hampton High. This was a very competitive game but unfortunately a loss for Waldegrave. The player of the match scoring the most full rounders was Darcie-Emily R.

On Wednesday our Year 9 Sports leaders helped run the Primary Borough Sports event, from supervising the track events of 600m, 60m sprint and relays to ensuring the smooth running of the Team 1000 inclusion events. Students met the Richmond Mayor, while Ms Bashford-Hynes met Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson at the event. Mr Corke, Headteacher of Bishop Perrin school where the event took place thanked the students for their hard work ensuring primary pupils had a good time, which helped make the event such a success.

BEHAVIOUR FOCUS

For the Summer Term the school’s leadership team has chosen to focus on our First Rule at Waldegrave:

Respect and value learning, each other and our environment.

As part of this we are asking students to respect and value learning, putting aside distractions and following our uniform policy by wearing the correct uniform at all times.

The full uniform policy can be viewed here.
