Components of Steel Structures Purpose

Bar Joists

-Supports floors and roofs -Typically designed as a simple span member

Superstructures

Pre Cast Planks Continuous interior voids add: -Structural stability -Reduce weight -Reduce Cost

-Usually Pre stressed -Typically used for floor or roof decking -Capable of spanning long open spaces (aid design flexibility) -Truss system that is staggered within the facility -Fewer columns -Faster fabrication and erection schedules -Reduced foundation costs -Designed to interlock with concrete slabs -Permanent form and positive reinforcement for concrete

Cast In Place Concrete

Wood Frames

Structural Steel

Pre Cast Concrete

Pre Engineered

Staggered Truss -In areas of low seismic hazard -For Buildings 6 – 20 stories tall

Composite Deck -Strong, Lightweight and economical

Pre Cast Concrete (1)

Wood Stack Framing (1)

• Advantages of Pre cast compared to Cast-in-Place ▫ Higher quality control ▫ Speed of erection ▫ Freedom in the architectural shape of the members • Typical utility of pre cast concrete ▫ Retaining walls ▫ Foundations ▫ Floor systems ▫ Storm water detention vaults ▫ Sound walls/barriers

• Floor deck of the structure sits on top of the walls • Floor system consists of:

▫ Wood Joists ▫ Floor Trusses ▫ TJI®

Silent Floor Trus Joists (brand name)

Wood Balloon Framing (2)

Pre Cast Concrete (2)

• Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) • Very common building material for load bearing walls • Concrete Block Structure (CBS) • Advantages of CMU Structures ▫ Durable

• Long continuous framing members with intermediate floor structures nailed to them • The heights of window sills, headers and next floor height marked out on the studs with a storey pole

▫ Self Contained ▫ Fire Resistant ▫ Low Maintenance

• Disadvantages ▫ Labor Intensive Construction ▫ Water Penetration ▫ Difficult to Insulate ▫ Nominal modular dimensions
