Ballasted/Non Ballasted
Foiled Tech.
• A single ply roof membrane • Held in place with gravel • Large, wide-open rooftops • The system usually includes: ▫ A vapor retarder ▫ Insulation laid loose, ▫ Mechanical fastened to the deck. • Covered with well rounded river stones. ▫ Diameter of .75" to 1.5“ • Large Retail Stores • Warehouses
• Typically used for:
▫ Thermal attic insulation ▫ Duct work ▫ HVAC equipment
• Part of a “system,” a cooling/heating strategy • Removes heat before entering facility space
Asphalt Shingles
Mechanical Fastened
• Two Types: ▫ Organic
▫ Fiberglass or glass fiber
• Upgrade from ballasted systems, ▫ High wind areas ▫ Held in place by the plates and fasteners • Secured through the membrane and into the deck • Widely installed roofs in the commercial roofing industry ▫ Mild to moderate winds
• Organic: ▫ Generally paper saturated with asphalt ▫ Top coating of adhesive ▫ Ceramic granules embedded • Fiberglass: ▫ Base layer of reinforcing mat ▫ Made from wet, random-laid fiberglass ▫ Mineral filler makes shingle waterproof
Fully Adhered Systems
Wood Shakes
• Essential for high elevations or hurricane-prone areas • System includes ▫ Bonding adhesive ▫ Water-based ▫ Asphalt-based products ▫ Cold-applied adhesive • Roof system has highest wind uplift ratings • Adds thermal efficiency
• Shake is a basic wood shingle • Made from split logs • Typical wood types for roofing ▫ North American – Western Red Cedar ▫ Central Europe – Pine • Shingles vsShakes • Shingles ▫ Sawn on all sides • Shakes ▫ Split logs
