We are so pleased to be sharing our newly designed Library Happenings newsletter. After receiving extensive feedback from staff and customers, we are proud to unveil a design that makes it easier to find events in the branches you most visit and more information about library resources. You told us you wanted to know more about what the library offers, and we listened!

⚛ THE ABC’S OF HIP HOP WITH BABA BOMANI Use rhythm and rhyme to explain basic reading and math concepts while breaking and discover how to rap the alphabet backward. Learn crucial active listening skills and Black history. For kids

While the new layout organizes events by branch, it precludes us from including all of the more than 1,000 programs we offer each quarter. But never fear, as we’ve made it easy to find all events at your favorite libraries with a handy QR code on each page. We’ve even grouped nearby branches together as well, since we know many of our customers visit more than one library. The one exception to this new format centers on our systemwide commemoration month events like Black History Month, Women’s History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. For each issue, we will continue to organize these events on their own page, no matter which branch is hosting. See page 3 for details on this issue’s special Black History Month events. With this new format, we look forward to opening your eyes to the incredible breadth of services and resources your library offers. Don’t forget to sign up to receive the newsletter electronically and information on branch events by email by visiting aacpl.info/emailnewsletter .

Severn Library Customers Benefit from Improvements Funded by Local Development Council Over the last three years, the community served by the Severn Library has benefited from a number of grants received from the county’s Local Development Council. Thanks to an investment of more than $1.4 million, the interior and exterior of the popular library have been substantially improved including creating more welcoming and functional public spaces, increased visibility of the branch and the ability of library staff to reach customers outside the building through the new Library on the Go vehicle, Twig. Additional improvements to restrooms in the facility and more exterior renovations and enhancements are also underway. AACPL thanks the Local Development Council for their tremendous support.

to the aroma of fresh rosemary and thyme, the garden engages all senses and provides an opportunity to interact with the environment for all who visit. The idea of developing the library’s courtyard started in December 2021. The Watershed Stewards Academy, a group that trains and mobilizes community leaders to drive change for sustainable landscapes and clean waters, approved the project and assigned steward candidate Ayia Lindquist to create the plan for the garden, apply for funding, source the materials and coordinate the installation and upkeep of the garden. Thanks to the hard work of our library staff and the Watershed Stewards Academy, the sensory garden continues to thrive after being installed in November 2022. Funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Library Foundation and the Gardens of Connection, the garden has been the site of many educational programs and can be enjoyed year-round.
