A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AND THE BOARD CHAIR

In 2022-23 Capital Harmony Works (CHW) found its footing as a complete, fully engaged organization. Staff, students, and families worked hard to integrate all of our programming and it showed in our performances and achievements! We remain enormously grateful for the support of our many constituents, friends, donors, and the public and private organizations that have invested in Trenton’s young people through our creative youth development programs. The impact of your gifts is evident in the music and smiles of our students. Thank you!

The merging of Trenton Children’s Chorus, Trenton Music Makers, and Music for the Very Young was completed in February 2022. We owe a debt of gratitude to the many supporters, friends, staff, and Board members who acted upon their vision for a united music program to inspire our students through powerfully connected programs. Leading this work was Carol Burden, President & CEO since 2015 who moved on from her position at CHW in July 2023 to new beginnings in NYC. While here in Trenton, Carol fostered key relationships in Trenton, its surrounding region, and nationwide. These partnerships expanded our influence in education, performing arts, government, philanthropic, and corporate sectors. Carol and the Board developed the staff composition into a cultural profile that better reflects the youth in Capital Harmony Works’ programs. Under her leadership, CHW collaborated with the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to establish evaluations that measure the impact of Trenton Music Makers’ work, a system now being used to evaluate programs in El Sistema- inspired organizations throughout New Jersey. She and the Board navigated the organization safely through the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns then soon after, led the organization’s rebrand efforts and renaming to reflect our fully ensemble-based model. In short, the impact of Carol’s work is tremendous! The 2022 Capital Harmony Works Strategy Framework (www.capitalharmony.works/our-vision) was implemented this year into our programs and used as a reference point for key decisions. Our newly merged organization offers an inclusive afterschool chorus, an intensive afterschool orchestra, and universal grounding in musicianship and expressivity for preschool children, and we are positioned to have a greater and more lasting impact than ever. Our organization’s focus on students’ musical growth and application of a sustainable business model has been at the core of our success. Student enrollment increased as much as 52%, access for Trenton-based families was our priority in recruitment, and our diverse Board led the organization’s forward direction. Capital Harmony Works now stands on firm footing. The success of Capital Harmony Works rests on the efforts, care, and responsibility of this community. Our programs are tuition-free to all students which means every gift of time and treasure matters. Whether you are a donor, friend, audience member, volunteer, parent, student, or Board member, your care is the foundation of our success with students. As we watch our young performers on stage, you are encouraged you to imagine where these kids may be if they were not here. And let’s imagine together where they may be in future years BECAUSE they have grown with us at Capital Harmony Works. This Annual Report includes not only news of the past year, but also a look forward to the work ahead. Our new President & CEO, Paul Chapin comes to CHW with a rich history of accomplishments in the music and education fields. The connections he has built over time throughout Mercer County and New Jersey will help drive the communications and development of new supporters while his passion for youth development will attract new students and families. Our programs are growing with innovative opportunities for performance and new ensembles led by our most skilled students. The coming year promises exciting experiences for our audience, our donors, and most importantly, our students. With our gratitude, John Hart, Board Chair and Paul Chapin, CEO

34 Years of Youth Choir Excellence- An Ongoing Capital City Legacy

Trenton Children’s Chorus has so much to feel proud of. Founded in 1989 as “Covenant Singers” by the extraordinary Sue Ellen Page and a cadre of dedicated people at Nassau Presbyterian Church, the dream of a vibrant youth choir in the Capital City caught fire in the hearts of families both in and outside of Trenton. From wide-eyed fidgety kindergarteners, up to proud, poised high school singers who have so much to share with us and the world: Trenton Children’s Chorus has inspired people throughout the state and the region with its demonstration of the power and beauty of young people’s voices. In December of 2022, Trenton Children's Chorus was proud to perform at Union Baptist Church, after being named the recipient of the church's annual Christmas Stocking donation. Our middle and high school students went on to perform that same day at the Trenton War Memorial with the Capital Philharmonic in the American Repertory Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. In February of 2023, all choirs took part in a Black History Month Concert at Artworks in Trenton, that included a collaboration with local visual artist and poet, Phillip McConnell, as well as a collaboration with Union Baptist Church's Gospel Choir.

Meet our Interim Artistic Director and Choral Readiness Director,

Desiree Melegrito

Desiree Melegrito has over 20 years experience as a general and choral music specialist, in both public and independent school settings. She holds bachelors and masters degrees in music education and piano performance from Ithaca College and Westminster Choir College, respectively, and draws from Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly principles in her teaching practice. Desiree has been a long-time teaching artist with the Trenton Children's Chorus, where she has enjoyed conducting choristers ages 5 - 18. She is also a new member of the Performing Arts Faculty at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, PA.

What is your most memorable experience with TCC? “My favorite experience with the choir was the two-day joint workshop and conference we went to in Delaware, we learned A LOT!” -Siana, Age 13 CAPITAL HARMONY WORKS | ANNUAL REPORT 2022-23

Meet Zulu!

Age: 11 Grade: 6th School: Christina Seix Academy TCC Choir: Intermediate

Zulu is in his 3rd year at TCC and now sings in the intermediate choir with Ms. Melegrito. What is your favorite part of TCC? I like meeting new people, singing with them. I like ‘Joy in my Heart’ by Rollo Dillworth. It gets stuck in my head sometimes. Rehearsals are exciting but feel really long sometimes, but they’re worth it!

What is your favorite show or movie?

Black Panther right now. I like the first one.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at school or TCC?

Hanging out with my friends and talking with them.

My favorite time so far was drumming for “Spring Into Song.” I did it alongside three other drummers and it was cool to do that and be a singer.” What is your most memorable experience with TCC?

Laying A Musical Foundation for Thousands of “Tiny Trentonians”

At the end of the 20th century the landmark Abbott v. Burke rulings mandated free preschool in New Jersey’s under- resourced public schools (long before the same rulings were more famously reflected in New York City). The district was seeking a partner to provide excellent early-childhood music and movement, and we (then named Trenton Community Music School) were ready. Our extraordinary program founder Ronnie Ragen, with research partners from Music Together (then named the Center for Music and Young Children), created Music for the Very Young: Music, Movement and Literacy, with the support of a federal research grant, and then later on with key support from the Princeton Area Community Foundation and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Since 2000, we have partnered with nearly every one of Trenton’s public preschools to provide music class, mentor classroom teachers in the everyday integration of music and movement, and gather families to encourage the fun of making music as multiple generations. We have worked with the City’s Office on Aging to bring pre-K children to senior centers for weekly intergenerational classes, with the Ewing Township Public Schools to provide an adaptive program for its special education preschool classes, and with the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf for classes for its children with multi-model disabilities. Music is thriving in the classrooms that serve Trenton’s youngest. In September and early October MVY began programming in CYO South Broad, Carolyn Stokes, Katzenbach School for the Deaf, and all Ewing preschool classrooms. In mid-November, MVY teaching Assistants, Ellen Acuna and Joyce Kay, along with Kelsey Swanson, led a Music Together workshop for all Ewing pre-K teachers. The session was titled Music and Language and focused on how music and movement can support language development, particularly in children with special needs.

In late November Trenton Public School superintendent, Mr. James Earle, joined an MVY session at Carolyn Stokes Preschool (pictured below). He sang (very much impressing the class with his booming bass voice), danced with scarves, and flew like a blackbird in a dyad with a student. December brought the return of a longstanding holiday tradition at Katzenbach School for the Deaf - a Holiday Music Party with families, students, and MVY staff. The opportunity to provide families the chance to better understand the power of music and create community has been sorely missed; it is hoped that these opportunities will continue. In January and February families joined their preschoolers for "Family Music Parties", where multiple generations gather to sing and dance with their students. In May Teaching Artists joined classroom teachers and families in graduation and promotion ceremonies throughout Ewing and Trenton.

Meet our Program Director, Kelsey Swanson

Kelsey joined the team in 2015 as the Project Coordinator for our Trenton Makes - Words! partnership project with the Children’s Home Society of NJ and the New Jersey State Museum, then as a Music for the Very Young Teaching Artist, and now the Early Childhood Program Director since 2020. From the beginning she brought to the role deep knowledge of children, from her years as a Montessori educator, a youth sexuality educator, a diversity and inclusion facilitator, a Music Together teacher, and a mentor for youth-led tutoring programs. She loves to support young learners, colleagues, school partners, and families through continuous dialogue and life-long learning. Kelsey holds a B.A. in Sociology and Gender Studies from Manchester University and a Master of Education in Global Education Policy from the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign.

Did you know?

In 2003, (then known as the Trenton Community Music School) was awarded a Federal Arts Education Model Development and Dissemination grant, in partnership with the Trenton Board of Education, to provide MVY services to all 23 of the district's preschool classes housed in the elementary schools, over three years. The award was the only one for a pre-K program. The grant provided resources to focus on language and literacy development implicit in early music learning and gave classroom teachers tools for integrating this powerful learning medium into their daily classroom activity. As one participating classroom teacher noted, "This program isn't just about music, it's about how children learn".

High Access, and High Expectations

In the early 2000’s, when people in the Northern Hemisphere started noticing this phenomenon of massive youth orchestras springing up in every city and town of Venezuela, “El Sistema” became a commonly understood (and often misunderstood) concept among educators. But the fundamentals were clear: create access in communities where access is lacking. Provide all of the resources required. Gather young people for intensive periods of time, to foster rapid skill development. Promote understanding that as an ensemble of players thrives together, it mirrors society at its best, where all cooperate toward a shared goal. In 2013, the Superintendent of the Trenton Public Schools, himself with a background in modern dance, prioritized the revitalization of the arts in schools, and teamed up with us to provide space for an afterschool orchestra. We began in 2015 with three teachers and thirty violinists at one school. By 2021, Trenton Music Makers has included over 200 violinists, violists, cellists and bassists from 26 of Trenton’s public, charter, and parochial schools. We had consolidated from four different school locations to a single high-powered orchestra site at Westminster Presbyterian Church, an activist urban community hub in the East Ward on the border of Chambersburg and the Wilbur District. In September 2022, we kicked off the school year performing at an event organized by El Sistema New Jersey Alliance, hosted by the United Children’s Music Project in Weehawken. Participating in such events gives us the opportunity to travel, meet other young musicians from Sistema-inspired programs in NJ with the same musical interest, make friends and present and perform our work as TMM to a wide audience. And in October, we launched our Percussion Ensemble. This came with our Artistic Director’s vision to build the “Trenton Sound,'' recreating the rich rhythms that represent our students’ cultures, mixing it with western classical music and string instruments. With this addition, we’ve made room for drumming to be a part of the TMM identity as the percussion ensemble performs with the orchestra as well. We continue to develop a strong percussion program to go hand to hand with the string program.

On March 16, 2023, the TMM Florence Price Orchestra was the curtain opener for Capital Philharmonic, Trenton’s local professional orchestra, at the Patriots Theater of the War Memorial Ballroom. This is an imperative partnership as part of training our budding musicians to work with the professionals within their own community. This is an ongoing collaboration with Capital Philharmonic and our students will perform with them again on March 16 2024. In 2017, When composer Julian Grant was TMM Chairman, he had the idea of writing a piece for the orchestra as a gift, constructed of and infused with ideas from the students. After some training, maturity, and tweaks of the original version rehearsed with the composer himself, we were finally ready to take on a composition of its difficulty. We dusted off the “Julian Grant composition” folder and began learning it and preparing for performance. On May 26, 2023, TMM premiered Julian Grant’s Lopsided Sonata. It was a full circle moment, demonstrating tenacity and growth as students displayed the prowess to play at the experienced level required for such a piece! This past July, Cindy Lorenzana, TMM violin student, was accepted into the 2023 Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles National Festival (YOLA), an organization similarly invested in community youth development through music. This feat didn't come without tribulations given that this was Cindy's third year auditioning for a coveted spot in this summer program. Cindy’s determination is not only a testament her resilience but a nod to how much she has developed under the tutelage of Trenton Music Makers. Cindy was flown to Los Angeles from Newark Airport, spent a one-week residency rehearsing and preparing at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA and finished the festival with a performance at Walt Disney Hall under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.

Meet our Artistic Director, Melissa Niño A Venezuela native, Melissa grew up with the renowned music method originated in Venezuela El Sistema. At the age of 6, she was selected by Professor Emil Friedman to join the prestigious school Colegio Emil Friedman in which she was trained in violin, chamber music and orchestra. She participated at the Juan Bautista Plaza violin competition at the age of 14 and is a former member of the Virtuosis de Caracas ensemble. Melissa is an alumni of the world recognized institution Interlochen Centre for the Arts in Michigan, USA and a former member of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and The World Orchestra. A graduate of Indiana University South Bend and Arizona State University, she is the founder of the TrèsFemme Trio, a chamber music ensemble that performed unknown compositions by women composers that debuted in the Veranos de la Villa Festival in Spain. Apart from the classical world, Melissa has collaborated with artists from other genres such as BB King, Marc Anthony, The Monomes among others. In addition to performing, Melissa has a remarkable pedagogical career teaching violin, chamber music and orchestra in countries including USA, Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong. Niño is the Co-founder of El Sistema Hong Kong and is also one of the first El Sistema inspired educators to launch an orchestra program for the elderly population of Hong Kong.

“ Besides playing an instrument, what are you learning?” “I am gaining the capability to learn to teach, to be a leader and be an inspiration.”

Angel, Age 14 (Violin)
