EVOLUTION (continued) that, from a continuance of war, there will ultimately emerge the superman, a race which will dominate the world. Evolution is thus the foundation stone of the modem philosophy of mili tarism. The exponents of militarism, such as Nietzsche and Bemhardi, have boldly claimed that, from an evolu tionary point of view, this is the na tural law, and that it is, therefore, biologically normal and right to crush the weaker peoples of the earth. As Bernhardi has stated, "War gives a biologically just decision.” th is is the underlying basis of Nazism, Fascism, Communism and other similar move ments toward world domination by militarism. Prof. Will Durant of the University of California has stated the truth when he said, “Nietzsche was the child of Darwin.” Some evolutionists, however, con demn the conclusions arrived at by the militarists on the grounds that the struggle for existence is one of each species against its environment and not of one species against another. But the struggle for existence between species is a matter of common observation and the position taken by the militarists is quite as reasonable and logical as that of the biologists who support evolution. But here again there is a higher law. Has not every aggressive nation eventually perished with the sword? On the other hand, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5). In II Thess. 2:11 we read that in the last days “. . . God shall send them strong delusion, that they should be lieve the lie.” (Literal translation from the Greek.) What is the lie? It is the first lie, the lie of Satan, who is the father of lies (John 8:44). “And the serpent said unto the woman, ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye shall eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall
be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:4-5). In these words Satan denies the truth of God’s Word and promised Eve that if she and Adam were to eat of the forbidden fruit, they would become “as gods” or supermen. Is not the very essence of evolution the denial of God’s Word and the promise of the super man? “The Lie” is the deliberate and wilful denial, of God’s Word, so as to make Him a liar, and the exaltation of man in the form of humanism, modern ism and atheism. In the doctrine of evolution Satan has revived the first lie with which he deceived mankind in the beginning. Christ has said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Shall we accept the truth, that is the Lord Jesus Christ, or shall we believe the lie? “Choose you this day whom ye will serve” (Joshua 24:15). It is no exaggeration to say that as a direct result of the teaching of evolu tion thousands of young men and wom en have lost their faith in Christ and His Word, as a consequence of which they have turned from the Light to darkness and to sin. Is it any wonder, then, that today “men’s hearts (are) failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth” (Luke 21:26)? ' Pr°I- Holmes has rightly stated that “few people who accept the Darwinian theory of evolution realize its far- reaching import, especially in the social sciences”—how true this is. No doubt there are many honest and sin cere evolutionists who would repudi ate with scorn any association with the evils mentioned. But it is a fact that the evils which they would condemn are nevertheless the logical outcome of the doctrine which they embrace. The one who is willing tq repudiate the doctrine of evolution is likely to find himself more or less in an isolated
