AT SOMERSET FAMILY PHYSICAL THERAPY Happy Father’s Day

Around the same time that we started Somerset Family Physical Therapy in 2004, my youngest daughter, Shannon, was born. Even though I was there when my eldest son and daughter were born, with Shannon’s birth, I felt like I was becoming a brand-new father all over again. Over the years, it’s been incredible to see her and the practice grow up together. As a father, it’s incredibly special to see your daughter take her first steps, say her first words, go to her first day of school, win her first swim meet competition, and go through all of the other milestones that we all go through in life. Seeing Somerset Family Physical Therapy grow up in that time has been equally special. In a way, this clinic is like another child to me. Just as I’ve been there for all of Shannon, Timothy, and Colleen’s life events, both big and small, I’ve seen all of Somerset Family Physical Therapy’s moments, too: our opening day in 2004, our first patient, the addition of our second physical therapist, and each and every specialized program we’ve been able to offer over the years. But just as we’ve grown, we’ve also seen you grow for the better, too. With Father’s Day coming up, I can’t help but reflect on how proud I am of my children and the families who have come to Somerset Family Physical Therapy over the years. Nothing makes a father more proud than seeing his kids succeed, and that’s exactly how I feel about my three kids and the extended family that we have through Somerset Family Physical Therapy. To us, you’re more than just another patient. We’ve seen you go from being in pain to recovering full speed ahead without looking back, and in some cases, we’ve seen your kids grow up with us as we’ve helped them beat their sports injuries and get back in the game. While it’s always nice to reminisce about the early days, growing up has its advantages. Now that we have two physical therapists and Diego running all of our additional physical therapy programs, we’re able to help more families in the central Jersey area than ever before.

When Somerset Family Physical Therapy was born, we put family in the name to highlight that you are all family to us, and this will never change. Over the years, it’s been incredible to see the support that we’ve gotten from you, our extended family, and we look forward to many more years of growing with you and your families.

Happy Father’s Day!

– Kevin Kurtz

Summer Reading for Busy Families

Audiobooks Inspire a Love of Stories in All Ages

FOR FAMILY BONDING

Summer reading lists are always popular, but most families rarely have time to have dinner together, let alone sit still reading for hours. Luckily, the ever-growing popularity of audiobooks means you don’t have to wait for school to start again for your kids to get back into literature. Here are a few great audiobooks you can introduce to your family this summer.

“Half Magic” by Edward Eager, read by Words Take Wing

A beloved family favorite since it was first published in 1954, “Half Magic” tells the story of siblings Jane, Mark, Katharine, and Martha, who discover a magic wish-granting coin. They soon realize the coin only grants half of what they wish for, and an unplanned vacation to the Sahara, followed by chaos in King Arthur’s court, is just a one of the hilarious misadventures this family must overcome together.

FOR THE LONG ROAD TRIP

“The Bad Beginning” (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry

FOR SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW

When a terrible fire destroys the Baudelaire mansion, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves orphans and are sent to live with the terrible Count Olaf. Convinced their awful new guardian is only after their fortune, the Baudelaires must use their intelligence and skills to stick together and (maybe) overcome their sad circumstances. Fans of the Netflix series will love to hear the story that started it all! Who knew such an unfortunate series could mean fun for the whole family?

“The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown, read by Kate Atwater

When lonely robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she finds she’s trapped on a wild island. Struggling to survive and befriend the island’s hostile animal inhabitants, Roz must eventually face her mysterious past, which threatens to tear her home apart. This brand-new book is a stunning tale about the environment, technology, and the wonder of being alive. These are just a few of the many titles your family can enjoy this summer. Find even more by visiting Audible.com or checking the audiobooks catalogue on iTunes.

Pounding the Pavement Do You Need to Stop Running?

Eventually, every runner will experience a sore muscle or achy joint in their running career. But when should you seek out a physical therapist?

strengthening exercises using stability balls, resistance bands, and body-weight exercises to increase your strength.

Runner’s injuries can be caused by poor form, inadequate preparation, and overtraining. While muscle soreness can be expected with most types of physical activity, many people also experience some stiffness at the beginning of a workout or joint discomfort the following day. As long as this pain goes away after a while, no additional action is necessary. However, any pain that lingers or keeps you awake at night should be carefully monitored and treated. If you get a few minutes into a run and your pain worsens, stop, walk, and seek out a physical therapist. Many runners will change their stride to compensate for a sore spot, but this doesn’t fix the problem and can cause other injuries in the long term.

So, do you need to stop running?

One of the hardest phrases to hear as a runner is to stop running, but according to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 80 percent of running injuries are caused by increasing mileage too quickly. A break from running is often the first prescription given by a physical therapist. Muscles and joints are slower to adjust to stress than the cardiovascular system, meaning it’s easier for runners to wear out their legs, back, or neck before their lungs. At the first sign of pain, it’s best to back off, slow to a walk, and focus on stretching or cross-training to strengthen the muscles around your sore spot, since most injuries occur due to weak surrounding muscles. When in doubt, visiting a physical therapist will allow you to learn the exact exercises and stretches that you need to get back to pounding the pavement.

Physical therapists can work to build up your muscles around your injured area. Your physical therapist will give you stretching and

Yellowstone: Where the Wild Things Are PAGE 4

Where the Wild Things Are THE UNSPOILED NATURAL MAJESTY OF YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views, with clay cliff faces and tree- covered mountains in every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S. For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another. As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive. More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family.

Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130
