Maintaining the Behavioural Bar ‘It’s just the way I am’ A manager’s guide
#TeamAnchor Session 4
p1
A manager’s guide • This is the fourth of 12 sequential sessions which managers will run with their teams over the next 12 – 18 months • You will need to allow between 60 – 90 minutes to run the session (you can build in more time to run the session if needed) • Each session builds on the learning and discussion from the last – so you must do them in numerical order • They can either be delivered face-to-face or virtually – whatever works best for you and your team • A workbook is available for your team members to complete to support their learning and encourage them to reflect on how they can demonstrate our values and behaviours in their everyday role (as a manager you can review them at colleague’s one-to-ones) • Facilitator notes are detailed below to support managers to facilitate the sessions Resources needed for Session 3 o Workbook for every colleague o Colleagues should bring their workbooks from the previous session with them o Post It Notes (if running it face-to-face) o You may want to break out in small group discussions – if you’re having a virtual meeting, here’s a short guide to how you can use the ‘breakout room’ functionality in MS Teams. Aim of this session To discuss how we as individuals can maintain the behavioural bar By the end of the session colleagues will have had the opportunity to: • Reflect on your own individual behaviours • Explore how to identify your bad habits and strategies to overcome these • Look at how we can develop our behaviours to bring our best selves to work

Session structure 1. Welcome
Session aim Set up, context, positioning
MINS 10
Activity and delivery instructions Welcome to the session • Check everyone knows each other (are there any new team members to introduce) • Style of the session will be interactive, pairs, small group work • Check they have the workbook to hand/printed (advise that there is space for notes on the last page) Ice breaker - reflection Ask each team member to share how they are doing with their commitment from the last session (what they committed to doing differently following the third session) and ask • how do you feel about this now? • what impact has this had on you and others? Acknowledge • the changes made and praise improvement • discuss any barriers that may have prevented them from making the changes, asking what’s worked well, not so well, what could they do differently to remove the barriers Encourage other team members to suggest how they think the barriers could be removed if the individual is struggling to see a way forward. Aim of this session To discuss how we as individuals can maintain the behavioural bar By the end of the session, you will have had the opportunity to: • Reflect on your own individual behaviours • Explore how to identify your bad habits and strategies to overcome these • Look at how we can develop our behaviours to bring our best selves to work

Session structure 2. ‘It’s just the way I am’
Session aim To consider as individuals if we have lowered the behavioural bar
MINS 10
Activity and delivery instructions Moving from ‘It’s just the way they are’ to ‘It’s just the way I am’ State: In the last session we discussed how we say - ‘It’s just the way they are’ today let’s start at home - do you ever use/say ‘it’s just the way I am’? Workbook page 2 - part 1 - individual – 5 mins Be honest with yourself about a bad habit (learnt behaviour) you have that has had/can have a negative impact on others at work and note in your workbook: • What this is • When it tends to happen • The negative impact it’s had on others and or the work environment Facilitators note: refer to bad habit example you used in previous session for Ask: Is there anyone that is happy to share? Acknowledge: and thank them for sharing. Facilitators note: be prepared to share your own or another example that you have observed. Add: Learned behaviours can be difficult habits to break, they can also be difficult to identify. Often, we don’t even know we are demonstrating them. food for thought for them. Add: We all have at least one.

How well this is working if already in place?
Who could support you with committing to this strategy?

Session structure 3. Bad habits & strategies
Session aim To explore how to identify your bad habits and strategies to overcome these
MINS 10
Activity and delivery instructions Exploring your bad habits and strategies Ask: How can we find out if we have any bad habits that we don’t know we have? Look for (not exhaustive): • Ask for feedback • Be more reflective of our impact, ask ourselves - ‘why did that happen?’ especially when things have not gone so well Add: when asking for feedback you might want to start small and ask someone at work that you have a good relationship with and trust to tell you the truth until you get comfortable with asking for feedback and not just from those we know will give positive feedback. Ask for constructive feedback too. It can be hard to ask for feedback because we might not want to hear what they have to say. State: Thinking back to our last session, back to me and my confession of a bad habit/behaviour Facilitator note: you may have shared your own bad habit to substitute the example that was given – use whichever example you shared before. I can, and I do, keep myself in check, I intentionally think about how I come across in conversations and the impact I’m having. I have developed a way of taking quick notes that stops me from forgetting a point I want to make, I put my pen in front of my lips so that there is movement of the pen before I speak, I try to ask others their thoughts first where fitting to the conversation. Actions and personal strategies can be taken to change behaviours to have a more positive impact – ‘Just the way I am’ is not an excuse I can use.

Session structure 4. Developing our best selves at work
Session aim To take some time for self-reflection
MINS 25
Activity and delivery instructions Developing myBehaviours – Bringing my Best Self to Work Workbook – individual activity– 15 mins State: It’s time for some self-reflection - this tool will help you to break down and encourage you to reflect on your own behaviours – explore your own ‘how’, discover where you demonstrate the ARCH values and where you might need to make any tweaks. This activity is all about bringing your best self to work through how you demonstrate the value-based behaviours. It can help you in: Getting better at what you already do Making sense of feedback you have received from a leader or colleague recently or in the past How we do our job is important - often more important than the knowledge we have and the job-related skills we possess. We have all worked with people who are great to be around - they nurture us, inspire performance and high levels of service, generally just make our life a whole lot more enjoyable. Equally, there has been that one person who is bursting with useful knowledge but for some reason we wouldn’t dare ask them for help, or someone who has years of experience but denies progress, instead choosing to work to outdated processes and methods. What you are witnessing in all these examples is their ‘how’ – their behaviours. This self-assessment is a useful exercise and by completing it you will benefit from: • Improved levels of self awareness - having a more realistic understanding of how committed you are to taking responsibility for our own work commitments and development needs. • Time to consider your awareness of others - understanding how, through your behaviours, you have an impact on your colleagues and residents and along the way identify your strengths or any adjustments you might need to make to your own personal style.

Developing myBehaviours Bringing my Best Self to work
This new awareness can support us perform at our best, improving the contribution we make. All of us have developed some poorer behaviours – and that’s ok, it’s part of being a human, but choosing not to acknowledge them or do nothing about them is not ok. So acknowledge your good stuff, but be realistic - it should not all be pretty. Up for the challenge? So let’s do this… • Bring your complete honest self to this activity and complete the myBehaviours Self Assessment • Reflect – what did you find out about yourself? • Actions – what are you going to do about what you found (Development Plan) Have fun and enjoy your personal development journey!

Session aim To take some time for self-reflection
MINS 25
Activity and delivery instructions • Understanding your levels of organisational awareness - allowing you to think about how you contribute to the bigger picture and aims of Anchor. Talk through the steps 1 to 4 of the developing myBehaviours document whilst looking at the examples - then ask them to: • Add their own ratings for each value-based behaviour section • Referring to example reflection page, transfer their ratings to the reflection area and complete the self-awareness section of reflection Facilitator note: if they haven’t completed all sections that is fine as there is post work for this activity to bring to the next session. Regroup and ask: Is there anyone that is happy to share their self-awareness improvement area. Acknowledge their reflections and thank them for sharing. Facilitator note: be prepared to share your example if there are no volunteers and this will then hopefully encourage someone else to share Add: the next steps are for you to complete the remainder of the value-based reflection areas and then create your myBehaviours Personal Development Plan which will form part of the next session. Talk through step 5 ensuring they are comfortable with what they need to do in preparation for the next session, advise that they are more than welcome to work through this with a colleague/bounce their thoughts of one another if they wish to.
