How To Present to... Humanists

When preparing, if possible, ask them for advice on how they’d like the presentation to go and what to include – they’ll appreciate your courtesy and consideration for their needs.

Pre-circulate relevant information to them before the presentation, letting them know what the objective of your presentation is.

• They like time to prepare their thoughts and consult with others.

When opening your presentation, show your appreciation for the opportunity to present and clearly state the objective of the presentation.

• Where possible, confirm and acknowledge the people you’ve consulted with to develop your presentation – they will want to know that you’ve consulted with other people appropriately. • Acknowledge the current culture or people impacts that are relevant to your subject.

Ensure you keep your presentation as succinct as possible and focus only on the key elements

• Your pre-reading will have provided enough detail for them, so just provide an executive summary of what it suggests.

If using slides, use a combination of pictures, models, and data tables wherever possible.

Engage them during the presentation by asking questions or allowing them to ask questions of you.

• Keep the tone of the presentation comfortable and un- hurried.

Use story-telling if possible, make sure the story is something they see as relevant to the people of the organisation.
