THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED ME Make Cool Renew MedSpa What It Is Today

Y ou may wonder who is the somewhat grumpy looking guy on the cover of your newsletter this month and what he has to do with Cool Renew MedSpa. No one models their personality or their life after just one person; we’re all products of several different teachers and mentors, whether implicitly or explicitly. That being said, we can probably all point to two or three people who had a greater effect on the direction of our lives than anyone else. When I think of who is most responsible for where I am today, the two people who stand above the rest are my father and Dan Kennedy. My father was a business owner and an entrepreneur. When I was growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, a lot of his work ethic and interest in entrepreneurship rubbed off on me. During the entire time my parents raised me, my father never had a 9-to-5 job, and to this day, I’ve never had one either. My upbringing might as well have doubled as a Ph.D. course in entrepreneurship and business ownership. Without my father’s influence, I doubt I would have ever thought to go into business for myself. He nourished my

entrepreneurial spirit and showed me all the ways I could serve a community as a business owner. If my father was the one who made me want to be a business owner, Dan Kennedy (guy on the cover) is the man who showed me how to be super successful at it. Whenever you visit

any CoolSculpting or other procedures our customers want, but then you wouldn’t be as comfortable or relaxed before and during the procedure, would you? Our office has more than one surprise designed to keep whomever walks through our doors satisfied, and all of that comes from Dan Kennedy’s approach to marketing, management, and high-level patient satisfaction. While there were certainly other bosses from whom I picked up skills and traits over the years, I can confidently say that around 90% of who I am as a business owner and how we run Cool Renew Med Spa is because of my father and Dan Kennedy. I’m definitely thankful for their influence. Without them, I don’t know that my team and I would be able to serve as many patients as we do. It’s not always easy to discern the good influences from the bad ones, but I’m glad I was able to, if only to provide a much-sought-after service to the Erie community.

Cool Renew MedSpa, take a look around. The large luxurious treatment rooms, the big screen TVs in those rooms, the dimmable chandeliers, the coolers fully stocked with all types of different beverages — that’s all because of Dan Kennedy. He’s an incredibly successful marketing expert who emphasizes the importance of overdelivering on promises to patients and clients. Our office could just be a cold, unwelcoming, sterile doctor’s office. We could still do “No one models their personality or their life after just one person; we’re all products of several different teachers and mentors, whether implicitly or explicitly.”

Pucker Up, Buttercup

The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but your lips let people know how you really feel. A smile and a laugh invite warm conversation, whereas a sharp frown lets people know it’s not a good time to chat. Your lips do a lot of work, so make sure you’re taking care of them! Here are three rules to follow when it comes to maintaining good lip health.

while it’s fun when your lips taste like cherry, stay away from flavored balms. These can actually lead to chapped lips.

2. MAKE TIME TO EXFOLIATE. You know how your shower loofah sloughs away dead skin cells, keeping your skin soft and healthy? Your lips are also covered in dead skin cells that need to be gently removed. Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a tiny loofah. Instead, whip up a DIY scrub to exfoliate your lips. Just mix 1 part honey with 2 parts sugar. Once a week, massage the scrub gently into your lips, let sit for 10 minutes, then remove with a gentle face wash. Regular exfoliation keeps your lips soft and smooth. 3. DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN. Research from George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., found that the No. 1 area people forget to apply sunscreen is the lips. We tend to forget that our lips are part of our skin, which is troubling because skin cancer around the lips can be very dangerous. If you’re going outside, be sure to protect your lips with lip balm containing SPF protection of 30 or higher.

Lip balm is a must, and not just for soothing chapped lips. Ensuring your lips stay moisturized will keep them healthy and prevent chapped, split lips. But before you apply the lip balm that’s been collecting dust on your dresser, check the ingredients. A good balm will have a base of beeswax, paraffin, and/or petroleum jelly. These lock in moisture and don’t evaporate as quickly. When shopping for lip balm, avoid harmful ingredients. Salicylic acid, menthol, camphor, and silicone can dry out your lips, and

Spring is in full swing here in Pennsylvania, which means it’s time to shed those winter layers and get out in the sun. Whether you’re just planning on working on your tan in the backyard or spending a day out at the lake, we at Cool Renew MedSpa want you to feel like your best self. That’s why when it comes to laser hair removal in the underarm areas, bikini area, or anywhere else, we’ve got the treatment to beat all others. Having to shave your arms or legs again and again can be tedious and repetitive. Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to worry about that ever again? You could endure the standard laser hair removal process, but that comes with its own set of problems — primarily that it feels like you’re being flicked with rubber bands repeatedly all over the targeted area. With that in mind, we’ve invested in the best laser hair removal technology on the market: the LightSheer system from Lumenis.

anything else you’ll find on the market is the

high-speed vacuum used on larger treatment areas and the ChillTip cooling mechanism used on smaller areas. At the same time, we

can customize the treatment to better accommodate your hair and skin type. That means, no matter what, you’ll get the best treatment for you!

This is a treatment both men and women can enjoy. Over the course of 5–8 treatments, the skilled care providers at Cool Renew MedSpa can use the LightSheer system to painlessly remove hair from any problem areas on your body. A stressful week at work might leave you feeling like you’ve aged 10 years in just five days. What’s more, prolonged periods of stress can also wreak havoc on your skin. You might have heard that stress was bad for your skin before, but have you ever wondered exactly what connects stress and bad skin? It might not be what you’d expect, but understanding that connection can help you reduce inflammation, irritation, and premature aging. Stress and bad skin are connected by a chemical produced naturally within your body: cortisol. In small doses, the hormone cortisol is harmless and even helpful. Your body produces it to help navigate fight-or-flight situations, and it also helps defend immune cells against infection. Cortisol is at its most helpful when it’s produced in short bursts. However, if the body produces it too frequently, it can actually cause your skin to deteriorate. When you’re constantly stressed out, your body continues to produce cortisol. Over extended periods of time, excess cortisol breaks down collagen, a protein that holds your skin together. When your skin is weakened, it doesn’t

hold moisture as well, which leads to inflammations of the skin, such as acne and eczema.

In an overworked and overstimulated world, your skin’s worst enemy ends up being a healthy hormone your body produces naturally. That means there’s likely not a special moisturizer or mask that’s going to soothe your skin — unless it soothes the stress that comes from within, as well. However, the good news is the best treatments for stress are free. Getting plenty of sleep, eating well, and exercising are all ways to reduce stress and make your skin healthier. Wanting to look your best for the summer months can put a lot of undue stress on your body. That’s why at Cool Renew MedSpa, we can help you achieve your perfect summer look in a stress-free environment, with your favorite drinks and even access to Netflix during treatment sessions. Laughter Yoga’s Rise as a Global Health Movement

LAUGH WITH ME! A Lighthearted Approach to Decreasing Stress

We’ve all heard that laughter is the best medicine, and it turns out that human physiology supports this claim. When we laugh, our body releases a flood of feel-good chemicals and neurotransmitters. Our blood flow increases, and our production of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, decreases. Oh, and laughing also burns calories! The feel-good, endorphin-inducing benefits of laughter are exactly what prompted Dr. Madan Kataria to develop laughter yoga in 1995. Laughter yoga incorporates breathing, stretching, clapping, and of course, laughing.

The laughter meetup had everyone in high spirits — until the group ran out of jokes. Unsure of what to do next, Kataria found another medical book suggesting the group didn’t need jokes to laugh. Fake laughter is just as beneficial as the real thing because the body can’t tell the difference between the two. Collaborating with this wife, Madhuri, Kataria combined common yoga warmups and breathing techniques with facilitated laughter to create the form of laughter yoga that is practiced worldwide today. If you’re interested in trying laughter yoga for yourself, then you’re in luck. Laughter yoga clubs exist across the United States and the world. Videos on YouTube can teach the basics, but laughter yoga tends to be most beneficial in a group setting. Just think about the last time you found yourself in a fit of giggles with a group of friends or during a comedy show. Didn’t it feel great? Rather than wait for a silly situation to trigger laughter, use laughter yoga to promote laughter and alleviate stress on any day at any time.

Kataria developed the initial idea after coming across research into the benefits of laughter on overall health and well-being. He began to put the research into practice by telling jokes to his patients, and after seeing the positive effects, he took his material to a

local park. Parkgoers, who were initially skeptical, joined in on the practice, and the first laughter yoga club was born.
