MICHAEL PARSONS _______________________________________ FINE ART

Amanda Snyder 1894–1980, Oregon

Amanda Snyder remains one of Oregon’s most highly regarded and collected mid-century artists. She explored a wide range of subject matter and frequently experimented with new ideas in art-making throughout her long career. A distinguishing characteristic of Snyder’s work is her use of scumbling, a technique of laying down and scraping away multiple layers of paint, building up a richly textured and complex paint surface from what remains. Snyder’s paintings of birds are often poignant and tender, and her groupings of birds can be dynamic and communicative of human concerns. Her work is held in many distinguished public and private collections, and the Portland Art Museum presented a retrospective exhibition of her work in 2012.

Three Gulls On A Cold Day, c. 1960, oil on masonite, image 22˝x 34˝, framed 26⅜˝x 38⅜˝ Artist’s handmade frame. The painting was recently cleaned by a conservator. Ideas about the American West, both in popular culture and in commonly accepted historical narratives, are often based on a past that never was, and fail to take into account important events that actually occurred. The exhibition Many Wests: Artists Shape an American Idea examines the perspectives of 48 modern and contemporary artists who offer a broader and more inclusive view of this region, which too often has been dominated by romanticized myths and Euro-American historical accounts.
