Ryde Hospital 90 th Birthday Ball Red and Gold
Ryde Hospital celebrated the hospital’s 90 th birthday in style at a Birthday Ball held on Saturady 27 July 2024 at the Ryde & Parramatta Golf Club. The venue was transformed into a sea of red and gold with almost everyone dressed to the theme colours. The event was attended by staff, former staff and friends of Ryde Hospital.
Aisake was the expert MC for the evening over seeing the proceedings, the raffle prizes and awards including the awards for best dressed. Then the flash mob took over the dancefloor and the party really started. Of course no birthday is complete without a cake. Many thanks to Narelle and Jill who organised this memorable event. It was a truly fun night for all. (see photo gallery for more images)
General Manager’s Message
What a night at the Ryde Hospital 90th Birthday Ball. It will go down in the history books for the hospital, as will the fantastic flash mob. Thank you to Renae McCarthy for acting in the General Managers role whilst I was on leave. She did an excellent job of leading the hospital through a very challenging period of high demand. There were some big milestones for the redevelopment this month with the finalisation of the Main Works Contract and the sod turn ceremony to formally launch construction. Work has started on construction of the temporary ICU and the bathroom replacement on GR5 has been completed. I would like to encourage all staff to complete the People Matter Employee Survey . Your feedback will help support you and improve our workplace and culture.
90 Years of Ryde Hospital Photobook A photobook celebrating 90 years of Ryde hospital has been created with a selction of images of the people and the campus over the years. Redevelopment News
(L-R) Trevor Danos, Leisa Rathborne, Amanda Bock, Tu Wai MacDonald, Premier Chris Minns, Health Minister Ryan Park, Anthony Schembri, Renae McCarthy, Dr Peter Roberts
Sod Turn Ceremony Construction is underway on the $526.8 million Ryde Hospital Redevelopment, with the first sod turned at the site, marking the start of major works. Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Health Ryan Park visited the construction site for a traditional sod turn event marking the significant milestone. Aboriginal performers, Tu Wai Macdonald and Dennis Duncan delivered a welcome to country and a traditional smoking ceremony. This involved burning native plants to produce smoke, which is used for cleansing the site and creating a positive environment for the project and the future hospital. The ceremony also recognised the importance of Aboriginal culture and acknowledged the significance of the site. “The hospital redevelopment will transform the health facilities for Ryde and surrounding suburbs, ensuring people can get the care they need close to home and providing staff with a modern place to work,” Mr Minns said. “We are expanding this essential service to meet the needs of the Ryde community for years to come.” To watch a video of the sod turn, NSLHD Sod Turn Video, and the 7 News Coverage. Ryde Hospital Head of Emergency Dr Peter Roberts spoke at the event and said staff were excited about the benefits the new hospital will bring. “Staff are looking forward to the new facilities which are long overdue,” he said. “This will be great for staff, the patients and also great for the community.” The project team is planning a staff and community event later in the year to celebrate the progress to date and acknowledge everyone’s input. Construction works are being carried out by AW Edward with the new hospital building expected to be completed in 2027. The new main entry, demolition of former buildings and landscaping are scheduled to take place in 2028.

National Stroke Week 2024
To celebrate National stroke week, Ryde hosted a vibrant and informative event aimed at promoting stroke awareness and prevention. The celebration included a variety of activities designed to engage both staff and visitors in understanding the importance of stroke prevention and early detection. Blood Pressure Checks was one of the key activities offered to all attendees. This simple yet vital screening helped many individuals become aware of their blood pressure status, a crucial factor in stroke prevention. Stroke Prevention Education throughout the day, by our healthcare professionals provided educational sessions on stroke prevention, including important topics such as recognizing risk factors, the impact of lifestyle choices, and the importance of regular health check-ups. A Quiz made learning about stroke more engaging fun. Participants eagerly tested their knowledge on stroke facts and prevention strategies, with winners receiving small prizes. This interactive approach helped reinforce critical information in an enjoyable way.
Lifestyle Modifications that can reduce the risk of stroke was a special focus. Topics included healthy eating, regular physical activity, and avioding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Attendees were encouraged to adopt these changes to improve their overall health. Demonstrating BEFAST tool for the early and timely recognition of stroke symptoms was one of the highlights of the day. BEFAST stands for Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time. It helps recognise stroke symptoms early, and attendees were shown how to use it effectively. Understanding these signs and seeking immediate medical attention can save lives and improve outcomes. Know your risk of stroke - Download the Stroke Riskometer
Roadshow to the Wards brought the Stroke Day activities directly to the patients and staff to spread awareness and ensured that the information reached as many people as possible. The day was a huge success, with active participation from both staff and visitors. It raised awareness about stroke and empowered individuals to take proactive steps towards stroke prevention and early detection.

Stories from the Past Ryde nurses commemorated Australian wartime nurses on ANZAC day centenary in 2015 The researching of old photographs of Ryde Hospital as we celebrate 90 years has led to the unearthing of some incredible stories and memories. Jen Kinsella shared some of theses stories and photographs, including ANZAC Day commemorations and memorabilia displayed in Denistone House several years ago. Jen gave a talk about WW1 Anzac nurses on that day at Ryde during the ceremony, and presented the story of the WW2 nurses in Singapore.
Maree Canty, Cheryl Trudinger & Jen Kinsella honouring our ANZAC nurses in 2015
The background photo on the TV screen in one of the photos, is a video of the bombing of a Singapore Hospital and Australian nurses in WW2. The Australian nurses were evacuated via a ship called the Vyner Brook, as ‘Singapore burned’ . Many nurses, patients and civilians were killed or drowned, as the ship was fired upon and sank, including my distant relative, Sr Kathleen Kinsella (seen in TV). Some nurses that had survived and drifted onto Radji Beach were then shot by Japanese soldiers. Sr Vivian Bullwinkle was the only survivor, as the bullet exited through her abdomen and she was left for dead.
Many years later I met one of the Australian soldiers who tried to save Kathleen and the nurses. He told me their stories. Ironically after he survived the war and Changi POW camp, he became my patient for many years. I held his hand as he was dying in Ryde Hospital about 10 years ago, and his family and I are still in contact. Please read the stories of Sr Vivian Bullwinkle, or Paradise Rd /Vyner Brooke nurses and Radji Beach nurse massacre. They are stories that shouldn’t be forgotten. Lest we forget.

Spring into Action to Prevent Falls
Spring is a great time to get active and take action against falls. The warmer weather and longer days make it easier to get outside and move around. Did you know being active can reduce falls risk. In fact, research has shown doing exercise, particularly balance and strengthening exercises, can reduce falls risk in older adults by 23%? This September, NSLHD Population Health Promotion and the Falls Prevention Committees are encouraging everyone to ‘Spring into Action ’. Access a range of resources to get your patients and clients moving and engaging in activity to stay strong and prevent falls: • Take the Spring into Action Quiz (and test your colleagues) • Find local exercise programs suitable for older adults, such as Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy & Active for Life and Stepping On • Access the Sydney North Health Network’s Health Pathways to find local clinics and services to help with falls prevention • Access falls prevention information sheets
