Sod Turn Ceremony Construction is underway on the $526.8 million Ryde Hospital Redevelopment, with the first sod turned at the site, marking the start of major works. Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Health Ryan Park visited the construction site for a traditional sod turn event marking the significant milestone. Aboriginal performers, Tu Wai Macdonald and Dennis Duncan delivered a welcome to country and a traditional smoking ceremony. This involved burning native plants to produce smoke, which is used for cleansing the site and creating a positive environment for the project and the future hospital. The ceremony also recognised the importance of Aboriginal culture and acknowledged the significance of the site. “The hospital redevelopment will transform the health facilities for Ryde and surrounding suburbs, ensuring people can get the care they need close to home and providing staff with a modern place to work,” Mr Minns said. “We are expanding this essential service to meet the needs of the Ryde community for years to come.” To watch a video of the sod turn, NSLHD Sod Turn Video, and the 7 News Coverage. Ryde Hospital Head of Emergency Dr Peter Roberts spoke at the event and said staff were excited about the benefits the new hospital will bring. “Staff are looking forward to the new facilities which are long overdue,” he said. “This will be great for staff, the patients and also great for the community.” The project team is planning a staff and community event later in the year to celebrate the progress to date and acknowledge everyone’s input. Construction works are being carried out by AW Edward with the new hospital building expected to be completed in 2027. The new main entry, demolition of former buildings and landscaping are scheduled to take place in 2028.
