The link between algae and phosphate
Phosphate is the major source of algae growth in swimming pools. Phosphate is introduced into the pool from your source water, leaves & plants, rainfall, and garden water runoff. Algaecides and disinfectants will kill the algae, but they don’t remove the phosphate that gets released back into the water. This phosphate, unless removed with Lo-Chlor Starver ® X, becomes the food source for further algae growth. This is what we call the ‘phosphate cycle’.
Algae visible in the water
Phosphate in the water promotes new algae growth
Chlorine and Algaecide are added to kill the algae
Algae is destroyed and the phosphate is released into the water
