Our Children Went Crazy With Joy A Hebrew Christian father writes from Poland: “Last week we received three parcels from you containing food and clothing and even some toys for the children. “One of the parcels contained a little rubber doll, among other things, and our children simply went crazy with joy. For years they have had no toys. We danced together with them sharing their happiness, and tears of joy came to our eyes. “Dear Pastor, when your help first arrived we were in the most dreadful situation, exhausted by years of inhuman suffering, and in addition our little girl was down with typhoid fever for seven weeks. At such a time our Cruci fied Saviour stretched out His merciful hands to us through His disciples in America and rescued us unworthy ones. “Please convey to all the dear friends of your Society our most fervent gratitude for the constant and effective help which pulled us through this most difficult situa tion. Daily we pray for you and for all the friends of your Society. May our Heavenly Father be gra cious and bless you all.” Hundreds of such pathetic let ters come to us constantly from every part of Europe and other countries, from people praising God for the help received, or pour ing out their hearts full of sorrow and agony. Your gift to The Friends of Israel Missionary and Relief Society will be a blessing— an investment which will bring joy, comfort, and revival of faith and hope to multitudes of Hebrew Christians and Jewish people. "P'RIENDSHIPS formed out of mu- tual liking for alcohol and to bacco have a very flimsy basis, and can hardly stand the test and pres sure of the dally life. This is read ily observed in the brawls and fights vhich occur in taverns. A large majority of all such altercations is a direct result of supposed “ friendly” drinking and smoking. In our day it has become a test of one’s so-called “manhood” to offer a ciga rette or a drink to a friend. Friend ships thus formed are easily and quickly broken. When the whiskey is gone and the cigarettes are no longer offered, then the bond is broken, and other friends are sought. God’s plan for friendship is based on a union of hearts around the Lord Jesus Christ. His Word links lives in a common bond around Himself. F r ie n d s h ip i n t h e S o c ia l W orld Psa. 119:63 The Psalmist made friends of God’s children. He sought the company of those whose interests were in heaven and whose desires were for the glory of Christ. The men of the world, however, use fleshly indulgences and worldly amusements for social attraction. The man who swaggers up to the bar, offers drinks to the crowd, tears open a package of cig arettes and offers a smoke, becomes a “big shot” and is well liked in the club. He is praised for his liberality. This is not God’s plan, neither is it a blessing to anyone. The liquor and tobacco are soon used up, and the heart is left just as empty as be fore. Such friends are not profitable. They bring no value into the life, no good to the soul. F r ie n d s h ip i n t h e D o m e stic W orld Luke 15:29 The habit of serving liquor in the home and permitting the children to taste of it and smell it, is a sure path to sorrow for both parents and children. Parents, smoking in the home, blowing cigarette smoke in the children’s faces, and leaving butts where the children can pick them up, are laying out for themselves a path that will bring grief in the com ing days. No one has ever claimed that liquor and tobacco in the home will help children to be honest, up right, godly, and useful. These things do not "accompany salvation” or Christianity. Apart from a religious aspect, they can do nothing but break down any resistance the child may have against sin and evil. They bring out sin, wickedness, and law lessness, and have no part in any program for human betterment. MAY, 1947

Rev. Carlton C. Buck Idea 1. If possible, invite a Christian doctor, who can show the scientific results of alcohol and tobacco on the human body, to speak to your group, and answer questions in keeping with the June 1 topic. Idea 2. Early in June, at a Sunday evening service, have your young people pre sent a play or skit bringing the Summer Conference idea before the adults of the church. This will remind them that conference time is drawing near, and that the young people need their co operation. Idea 3. It would be a fine project for your young peo ple’s group to sponsor in your church or community the scientific film, “The God of Creation,” available from the Moody Bible Institute, 153 Institute Place, Chicago. Idea 4. Have you tried an essay - writing contest in your society? The theme could be, “Why I am a Christian,” or a kindred sub ject. Your pastor, adviser, and the Sunday school su perintendent, could act as judges. Your church paper might be interested in pub lishing the winning essay.

meet together, drinking and smoking abound. Generally there is a bar at hand and the finer the brand of liquor offered, the greater the friend ship is supposed to be. The cork on the cigarette tip and the name in gold on the side of it, are considered a sign of unusual culture and spe cial friendship. This is the modern way, but God’s plan is quite dif ferent. His way is for men to be occupied with the Lord Jesus Christ, the blessings of heaven, and the
