King's Business - 1947-05

the word “return” appearing in this verse, we have set forth the true meaning of repentance. It involves' a turning away from sin and a turning unto God. Unless these two ele ments are present, there is no real repentance. “Thou hast burned this roll” (36:29). But the burning did not de stroy God’s Word. It only added to Jehoiakim’s guilt. Judgment came on apace. So today men may think they can destroy God’s Word by mutilating it, avoiding it, or denounc ing it, but their efforts will all be in vain. Not one word of Scripture will fail of fulfillment and every man’s life will be measured by it. J e r e m ia h , a M e s s e n g e r o f G od ( J e r e m ia h 36:1-28, 32) M e m o r y V er se : “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart” (Deut. 6:5). God’s people had forgotten Him again! To Jeremiah, His faithful servant, God said, “Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel.” God said that if His people knew the punishment that He was going to bring to them, they might repent of their sins and serve Him again. Jeremiah called his friend, Baruch, who wrote with ink the words that the Lord commanded. After the book was written, Baruch took the roll to the temple and read the message to those who worshiped there. Jeremiah hoped that the people would return unto the Lord when they knew how angry He was about their sins. One of the men who was in the temple' returned to the king’s house and told the princes the things which he had heard. The princes asked Baruch to read the book to them. Because they knew how angry their wicked king would be with the things which' the book said, the princes told Jeremiah and Baruch to hide. Soon the king heard about the book and had it read to him. He burned the roll at once. God commanded Jeremiah to re write the book, and to tell the king that he would be greatly punished for destroying God’s Word. Even though he knew that the king might take his life, Jeremiah obeyed God and re-wrote the book, for he loved the Lord God with all his heart. Are you Christian boys and girls doers of the Word and not hearers only? Worry is like a rocking chair; it will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.
