real commitment in our budget, and make time-payments to the Lord as en thusiastically as we do for a new car, dream house, a television set, a hobby, or our vacation trip ! “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings . . . Bring ye all the tithes into the store house, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith Hie Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Mai. 3:8, 10 ). Shall we not prove God this month? G O, labor on, spend and be spent, Thy joy to do the Father’s will; It is the way the Master went, Should not the servant tread it still? “ Go, labor on; ’tis not for nought,- Thy earthly loss is heavenly gain; Men heed thee, love thee, praise thee not; The Master praises; what are men? “ Toil on, and in thy toil rejoice, For toil comes rest, for exile home; Soon shalt thou hear the Bridegroom’s voice, The midnight peal, ‘Behold, I come!” ’ T HE shortest, surest way to all hap piness is this: Make it a rule to thank and praise God for everything that happens to you. For it is certain that, whatever seeming calamity comes to you, if you thank and praise God for it, you turn it into a blessing. Could you, therefore, work miracles, you could not do more for yourself than by this thank ful spirit : for it needs not a word spoken and turns all that it touches into hap piness.

By Bess McClennan Antisdale W ELL, it’s happened at last! My antiquated washer not only has been on strike, but this morning it groaned and squeaked its very last complaint against working at all. I con templated with no pleasure the blow this announcement would be to my hus band as I hopelessly rubbed lotion into the red cracks and crevices of my water logged hands in a vain effort to soften them. The pump tubing of the machine was as stuffed as grandmother’s Thanks giving turkey, so that I had to bail- water out of the tub in a back-breaking effort to empty the gray, lifeless suds into the drain. And the motor, which had been working only half-heartedly for weeks, stubbornly refused even to push the gyrator slowly. Four hours of washing and wringing by hand an al most endless pile of clothes exhausted all my desire to be agreeable. Oh, at this point, to have a butler announce, “ Luncheon is served, Madam!” In stead, my hibernation in the basement was awakened with Cathy’s ravenous wail, “Mommie, I’m hungry!” Beth joined with a pitiful pry, and my long- suffering husband completed the trio with his impatient, “ Isn’t lunch ready yet?” Soon occupied with a tossed green salad, I pushed back into the farthest corner of my mind the broken-down washer, hoping I would not have to re turn to it—or another wash—for some time. But the regularity of soiled cloth ing filling the laundry bag rapidly navi gated my dreams into the port of actu ality. I had to face the question, Just where can we squeeze another item into the already overcrowded budget? Some how, miraculously, we were able to dove tail into the outgoing expenses the pay ments on a new machine, and, after a few months, I was the proud possessor of a new washing machine! It meant some sacrifice, but it was well worth it. I am sure the Lord stretched our dollars to meet this material need, but I wonder how much more He would bless and increase our income if we would always see His work as being a real need, too. We take out our tithe regu larly and often more . . . and what spir- ' itual pride we have about giving Him His tenth of our income! Oh, if we could only see some missionary project as a J U L Y , 1 9 4 8
