again and prayed the third time, saying the same words.” As the heart contracts with a sense of need, and expands with a faith in God’s sufficiency, it will drive the same blood of prayer over and over again through the same veins; and life will be wholesome and strong. —A lexander M aclaren . MAY 14 Recognizing the High Priesthood of Christ “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne o f grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time o f need" (Heb. 4:16). What a wonderful provision o f grace and mercy, of confident joy and commu nion, is opened to us through the high priesthood o f Christ! . . . What a life o f restfulness and power, o f inward peace and outward energy, of cloudless commu nion and joyous testimony is ours, as we make use o f the high priesthood o f Christ, and prove the unfailing truth o f His W o rd ! . . . Above all, this provision o f the great High Priest should have an im portant influence on our prayers, and our feelings about them. Sometimes people will say, “My poor prayers will not make much difference,” or, speaking of some one’s utterance in intercession, “What a beautiful prayer that was!” Yet if the poor prayer and the beautiful prayer came before God by the High Priest’s presenta tion, the one was as effectual as the other; the poverty was no hindrance ■, and the beauty no help to its prevailing acceptance with God.—H ubert B rooke . M AY 15 God-Given Thorns “ There was given to me a thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7). Strange gift indeed! A thorn to prick, To pierce into the very quick, To cause perpetual sense of pain! Strange gift! And yet, ’twas given for gain. Unwelcome—yet it came to stay; Nor could it e’en be prayed away; It came to fill its God-planned place— A life-enriching means o f grace. Oh, much-tried saint, with fainting heart, The thorn with its perpetual smart, With all its wearing, ceaseless pain, Can be thy means o f priceless gain! —J. D anson S mith .

MAY 11 The Perfecting of Love “Herein is our love made perfect” (1 John 4 :17). , Love is not a manufacture; it is a fruit It is not born of certain works; it springs out o f certain relations. It does not come from doing something; it comes from liv ing with Somebody. “Abide in|me”—that is how love is born, for “ love is o f God, and God is love.” How many people are striving, who are not abiding 1 They live in a manufactory; they do not live in a home. . . When I am related to the Lord Jesus, when I dwell with Him, love is as surely born as beauty and fragrance are born when my garden and the springtime dwell together. .~ . And “herein is our love made perfect.” It is always growing richer, because it is always drawing riches from the inexhaustible love of Godg-J. H. J owett . MAY 12 The Overflow “My cup runneth over”. (Psa. 23:5). Whatever blessing is in our cup, it is sure to run over. With our Father, the calf js always the fatted c a lf; the robe is always the best robe; the joy is unspeakable', the peace passeth understanding ; the grace is so abundant that the recipient has all suffi ciency for all things, and abounds in every good work. There.is no grudging in Godjs benevolence; He does not measure out His goodness as the apothecary counts his drops and measures his drachms, slowly and exactly, drop by drop. God’s way is always characterized by multitudinous and overflowing bounty. Well may we each cry with the apostle, “I have all and abound.” God gives to all liberally, and does not up braid. There is more in Him than we can ever need, and He gives us more than we really can use for ourselves. . . . Let us freely permit our cups to run over. ' / —F. B. M eyer . MAY 13 ■ The Pulse-Beat of Prayer " Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me" (Psa. 8611). Let us turn all that we want into peti tions, and all that annoys us let us spread before God. Earnest reiteration is not vain repetition. “ Use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking,” said the Master. But the same Master “ went away
