Teen-Age Drinking Laid to Gang Habit

Many of today’s teen-agers take a drink they neither want nor particu larly enjoy because of the pressures of belonging to a gang, according to an Anglican Minister in Canada. “ Teen-agers want to belong, and to some, going along with the gang on a drinking party seems the best way to do it,” says Rev. L. M. McFerran, counselor of the Alcoholism Founda tion of British Columbia. While he says progressively more 18-to-20-year- olds have drinking problems, he finds it encouraging that these youngsters now seek and want professional help with their probleip. He said he had found that the youth of today was more intelligently aware of the po tential dangers of alcohol than his parents were. Most had been exposed to liquor at parties and in their homes and looked on drinking realistically, “ They don’t want to be told ‘you mustn’t.’ They want to be told ‘why not?’ ” he said. Recently the House of Representa tives passed a bill to permit stand-up drinking at Washington bars. For years, hard-liquor drinks have been served only at tables in eating places. Bars have been reserved for beer-and- wine trade and even these customers had to be seated. The bill allows cus tomers to down a quick one in a vertical position—but only if the bar is screened from the restaurant’s eat ing area. A sponsor of the measure explained: “ This bill permits serv ice without prior seating only to wait ing customers who are to be seated within a short period of time.” Antiquities Discovered Several clay tablets containing lin- quistic historical accounts, the names of deities, religious hymns, calendars and magic scripts in Babylonian and Sumerian inscriptions, dating back to the second millennium, B.C., have been unearthed by Iraqi archaeolo gists. The discovery was. made at Bakrawa village, in Sulaimaniya Province on the Iranian border, Taha Baquir, the Director General of An tiquities, announced recently. Dig gers discovered a temple dating to the third millennium, B.C. Mr. Baquir hopes it will shed new light on civili zation in the Mesopotamian Valley.
