A l t h o u g h i t is less frequently ob served, there is often the home situation where the husband alone becomes a “new creation in Christ” and therefore a different person from the one his yet unsaved wife origin ally married. This conversion experi ence ought to make the Christian hus band a greatly improved person in all areas of marriage. Read I Peter 3:7. “ Similarly, you husbands should try to understand the wives you live with, honoring them as physically weaker yet equally heirs with you of the grace of eternal life. If you don’t do this, you will find it impossible to pray properly.” (Phillips) Understanding “ Try to understand the wife you live with!” In other words, you can understand your wife! You are re sponsible before God to give thought to the needs, the likes and dislikes and the emotional nature of your wife. Spiritual life ought to make us sensitive to these matters. Real under standing produces thoughtfulness, ten derness, appreciation and trusting confidence. We are instructed to dis cover the needs and understand the responses of our wives. Wives always give the most in mar riage. They will gladly give up free doms that men can legitimately keep, if their husbands will walk with strong, firm steps. Through preg nancy, they temporarily give up their attractiveness and lose their self-con fidence. Once they were employed gnd felt needed by their employers. Their work was appreciated and praised. Their creative abilities were given expression. Now they are wives and mothers. We agree that this is the most noble calling of all. However, unless the Christian husband under stands that appreciation and recogni tion are just as important to her as to himself and that he is now the only one likely to give it, the wife will have little sense of achievement in her daily work. Too many Christian husbands neglect the responsibility of understanding their wives, in favor of easier, and more publicly glamor ous forms of Christian service! No Church activity will be accepted by

God as an excuse for being a poor husband! Chivalry “ Honour them as physically weak er, yet equally heirs of eternal life.” Muscular inferiority does not suggest inequality to God or to the earnest husband. The grace of God knows no favoritism between the sexes. How ever, physical weakness does require special consideration in terms of gen tleness, chivalry and courtesy! In a recent survey which I con ducted among various groups, I was greatly surprised that among Chris tian men married for four years or more, only 25% of them could think of any act of courtesy or chivalry im portant enough to survive from court ship into marriage! This is the typi cal male sin of taking marriage for granted. Spirituality “ If you don’t do this, you will find it impossible to pray properly.” Per haps this is why you have difficulty in your prayer life. You may be very faithful in devotional exercises, but they seem to be empty and artificial. It is fine that you are faithful in these vital areas of daily worship. But they will be enriched by conscious efforts in the area of good “ husbandhood.” It is obvious that Christian hus bands are not to forget that they have obligations to wives whom they are to love, understand, protect and hon or. Husbands are not to be so heav enly minded as to be of no “husband ly” good! You may be a different husband from the one your wife mar ried, but are you a better one? The Real Solution If you have been reading this and are the non-Christian mate in your home, the real answer to this problem lies with you. By receiving Jesus Christ as your own Saviour, your home will be united and can be happier and your love more meaningful than when you were first married. You will understand your Christian partner. The things that now puzzle and frustrate you will be made clear. Why not invite Jesus Christ into your heart and into your home?
