New dental clinic means healthy community profile for Navan gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Navan

the early success of his practice and the chance that he will be able to expand his clinic by taking on his own associate dentist and maybe add a full-time front- office receptionist as well. “Usually you expect maybe 20 to 30 patients a month,” he said. “For now, it’s just me and my hygienist. But I’m expecting to grow. We need two more people here at least as we grow.” Both Cumberland Ward Coun. Stephen Blais and Phil Grandmaitre, president of the Navan Community Association, welcomed the arrival of Dr. Mirfarsi to the community during the Jan. 27 official opening of the dental clinic. “This offers a service that fits in well for us,” said Grandmaitre. “It also reflects our vision of Navan of small businesses and family businesses that continue to serve the community.” “It creates a better balance for the community,” Blais said, adding that the clinic would also prove a benefit for residents in nearby Sarsfield and Vars. “I hope that this is the first of many small businesses that are going to open up in Navan.” Dr. Mirfarsi sees his clinic becoming very much a settled part of the Navan area. He noted that the Trim Road residential and commercial developments nearby indicate a growing need for professional services like his in the village. “There is a lot happening in this area and I’m not the only one noticing,” he said, adding that the quiet neighbourhoods and the variety of outdoor and other recreational activities is a draw for families to settle. “Navan’s small but they have a lot to offer. I like it here.”

A sign of a growing community is having local medical services. A bit of good health news for Navan’s future is that families there no longer have to drive to Orléans or Ottawa to get their teeth checked. The Navan Dental Clinic on Trim Road opened for checkups last fall but Dr. Alireza Mirfarsi held off with the official opening ceremony for a few months while he and his dental hygienist Natalie Brazeau got settled in. Despite icy rain and then a small snow squall that blew through the region last Friday, the two wrapped up their January session with a gathering of residents and local dignitaries to celebrate the successful launch of Navan’s newest small business and maybe the start of development of the community’s own medical services sector. “Navan is a great area,” said Dr. Mirfarsi. “It’s very community-minded. That’s why I am here, is for the people. I had folks telling me ‘Oh, we’ve been waiting for someone to come here.’” Mirfarsi has been in the dental profes- sion for more than 20 years, first practising in Montréal before moving across the Ot- tawa River to Orléans where he became an associate at an existing dental clinic. He wasn’t content to remain an associate member and chose to strike out on his own last year and set up his current practice in Navan. Both Dr. Mirfarsi and Brazeau are fluent in French and English to serve their local client base. He is also fluent in Spanish and Persian. The clinic’s client list has grown to more
