Predators pounce on Nats
With just more games left in their regular season schedule the Saint Francis Xavier Falcons look to be one of the teams to beat in the Prescott-Russell high school basketball scene. As of the end of January the Falcons are five and one for second-place overall in the league since the senior boys basketball season began last October. Coach David MacKinnon noted that every game proved a scoreboard battle. “They’ve all been fairly close,” he said, “even the one we lost to Rockland was just by three points.” This year’s Falcons roster features a first-string line-up plus six more players waitingonthebenchtosubinwhenneeded. Coach MacKinnon noted that the first line of players has proven to be one of the team’s strengths this season. “They play ‘big minutes’,” he said. “Especially when they stay strong with our offense game plan.” Coach MacKinnon singled out Falcons forward Chris McDonald for note as the team’s most consistent player and also one of the league leaders in scoring. If SFX can maintain its position in the standings, it will qualify for the playoffs and the right to host the semi-final match of the series. The two remaining key games in the regular league schedule for the Falcons are the Feb. 6 road game in Russell against the St. Thomas Aquinas Ravens, and a final home game Feb. 8 in Hammond against Vankleek Hill Collegiate. “Against those two teams, it’s going to be get out and run,” MacKinnon said. “Go forthefastbreakandthenpushthetempo.” Falcons flying high on basketball court gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Hammond Weekend woes for Grads The Cumberland Grads lost to Carleton Place 3-1 on the road and at home to Nepean 5-4 in overtime.. A couple of quick goals seemed to bode well for the Nationals in their latest junior hockey session. But the Predators took charge of the rest of the scoring for the day. Rockland hosted La Pêche Sunday afternoon at the Canadian International Hockey Academy Arena. The home team took an early lead in first period, punching in a pair of goals within the first 10 minutes. After that the Predators took over the point total, finishing off the afternoon with a 4-2 win against their hosts. The Nats finished their January schedule with an end-of-the-month road trip to St- Isidore and an evening match against the Eagles.
