Franklin Park Zoo The Franklin Park Zoo is a 72-acre zoo that seeks to inspire people to protect and sustain the natural world for future generations by creating engaging experiences that integrate wildlife and conservation programs, research, and education. While at the Franklin Park Zoo, Explo Vet students interact with multiple species of animals, learning how zoologists create exciting, natural exhibits and care for large animals in their hospital.
Karen Price South Paws: Pet CPR/First Aid
Karen is a lifelong animal lover. She enrolled in the Pre-Vet program at UMass Amherst graduating with a B.S. in Animal Science. After a few years working with a medical supply distributor and then a food distributor, she found a great job with Central Garden & Pet, the largest pet supply wholesaler and manufacturer in the world. Karen worked as a Special Accounts Manager at Central Garden & Pet for eight years. After having children, her desire to have a better work/home balance prompted her to open South Paws in 2006 with the support of her husband, Tim.
Amanda Bettle Wheaton College Animal Facility
Amanda orients our students to animals used in undergraduate science classes at Wheaton College, such as hissing cockroaches, degus, zebrafish, cane toads, and a box turtle. She supervises the Wheaton College Animal Facility, home to a collection of animals including fish, birds, rodents, turtles, amphibians and invertebrates. They are a valuable resource for students and faculty interested in the areas of animal behavior, psychology, biology, and neuroscience. It is managed through a collaborative effort between staff and student caretakers, and faculty and student researchers.www.explo.org
