About Houston

Houston, Texas is named after General Sam Houston who helped command troops in the Republic of Texas’ win in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In the early 1900’s, the burgeoning railroad system, along with the discovery of oil, helped create a population boom in this city that has resulted in Houston being the most populous town in the Southern United States. Houston is home to the most Fortune 500 companies within the United States, and as a result the economic growth has steadily increased over the years, allowing this metropolitan area to be a huge player in many national and global sectors including business, technology, and fashion. Located towards the Southeast coast of the Lone Star State, Houston has an incredibly vibrant art and culture scene, with their Theatre and Museum Distracts boasting some of the best attractions in the country.

Fun Facts

• With 2.3 millions inhabitants, it is the fourth most populous city in the nation. • More than 145 different languages are spoken in Houston. • Houston has an underground pedestrian tunnel system. The tunnel is 20 feet below the ground and runs for seven miles, linking 95 city blocks. • The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the biggest rodeos in the world.

• The Houston Galleria, opened in 1970 and is the largest mall in Texas. • It is also home to the world’s first domed stadium: The Astrodome opened in 1965 and served as a second home to the Houston Astros. • It is home to the largest medical center in the world: The Texas Medical Center • Houstonians dine out more than residents in other U.S. cities.

Houston Climate

The climate of Houston mirrors the climates of every other southern state in that it is typically hot and humid. While most of the year deals with humidity levels that are higher than the rest of the nation, the winters are usually very mild, with temperatures averaging around the low 50’s. Due to the relatively flat topography of the city and surrounding area, flash floods have often been a problem for Houston throughout the year, as well as the occasional tornado. It is usually advisable to pack lighter clothes during a visit to this southern city.

Discovery Green

Discovery Green is a beautiful, vibrant 12- acre park in the heart of downtown Houston that opened to the public in April 2008. The park was envisioned by several committed Houston philanthropists, who saw the space as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an urban park that would redefine the landscape of downtown. In less than four years, the site that became Discovery Green was transformed from an undeveloped, concrete eyesore into a beautiful and vibrant destination adjacent to the George R. Brown Convention Center. Discovery Green exemplifies a successful public-private partnership between the City of Houston, the Houston First Corporation and Discovery Green Conservancy, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that operates and maintains the park. The Conservancy produces hundreds of free events each year and receives no direct city funding.
