PROPHECY AND THE BODILY RESURRECTION (Continued from page 153) thu s risen, th a t He was hot dead bu t living. . . . The resurrection of Jesus Christ and th e réanim ation of His body are not identical. One may believe in th e first and not in the second.” In o ther words, Dr. Abbott, like many o ther Modernists, believed th a t resurrection has nothing to do w ith th e hum an body, bu t means simply continued sp iritu al existence. To hold th is view, the Modernist, of course, m ust deny the tru th of such passages as our Lord’s word: “ Dest ro y t h is temp le, a n d in thre e days I w i l l he spake o f th e temple o f h is b o d y . W h en there ris en fr om th e d e a d , hi s dis ciples re m e m b e r e d t t h is nnto them ; a n d th ey believed th e scriptu re, whi ch J es us h a d sai d. ” (Jo h n 2 :1 9 -2 2 ). Again: “ A n d a s t h e y ( th e d isc ip le s) th us spake, J e su s in th e mid st o f th em , a n d sa it h un to th em , P ea c But th ey we re te rr ifi e d a n d affr igh ted , a n d s up h a d seen a spir it . A n d h e sa id un to them , tr o u b l e d ? a n d w hy d o t h o ug ht s a r is e in your h my h a n d s , a n d my f e e t , t h a t i t i s r m y s e lf : h a n d fo r a sp ir it hath no t fl es h a n d b o n es , a s y e s e e whe n h e h a d th us spoken, he shewed them h is f e e t ” (Lu ke 2 4 :3 6 -4 0 ). When Dr. Abbott says “ every death is a resu rrection ,” he denies no t only th e fulfilled prophecy of th e Scriptures con cerning our Lord’s body, th a t it should be raised up after the Jews though t they had “ destroyed” it, bu t he denies also th e unfulfilled prophecy of th e Scriptures concerning the pledged raising from th e dead of all th e bodies of those who have fallen asleep in Christ. God’s Word declares th a t the resu rrection of th e blessed dead is still in th e future. Dr. Abbott and the many Modernists who agree w ith him say it is in the past. They deny th e predictive prophecy of th e S criptures concerning th e resurrection. T h at God’s Word never identifies death and th e resu rrec tion, b u t puts the resurrection in th e fu tu re even for those who have already died, is beyond question: “ For t h e earnest e xpe ct at ion o f th e creature t h e m a ni fe st a ti o n o f th e sons o f Go d.. . . Beca use i t s e l f a ls o sh a ll b e delive red fr om th e bo n d a ge into th e glo rio u s lib e r t y o f the ch il d ren o f Go d.. . . only t he y , b u t ou r se lv e s a ls o , whi ch ha ve th e fir S p i r i t, even w e o ur se lve s groan w it h in our se lve th e a d o p ti on , t o w it , th e red em p tio n o f o u r B ar e saved by h o p e : b u t h o p e t h a t i s seen i s no t a m a n se e t h , w hy d o th h e y e t h o p e fo r? ” (R o m . In the g reat resu rrection chapter, (1 Corinthians 15,) P aul declares, “B u t now is Christ risen from the dead.” P rom th e dead. Notice w hat th is means. If Christ was risen from th e dead, th en Christ had been, for a time, dead and not risen ; and some tim e afte r He had en tered into the condition of death, He came ou t of th e condition of death, when He was risen. He was no t always risen. There was a period of tim e when He was no t risen, and afterw ards, He was risen. Lyman Abbott says th a t Christ afte r H is death was always risen: risen on th e first day ju s t as much as on th e th ird day, for “ every death is a resu rrection .” The Mod ern ist denies the prophetic aspect of the resurrection. But “ th e ir word will e a t as doth a canker: . . . who concern ing th e tru th have erred, saying th a t th e resu rrection is past already; and overthrow th e faith of some” (2 Tim. 2: 17, 18). Paul, again setting fo rth th e inspired tru th concerning th e resurrection of th e body, and th e imperative necessity to any salvation a t all th a t “ th is corruptible m u st p u t on incorruption, and th is m o rtal m u st p u t on imm ortality,” declares th a t it shall come to pass fo r them " th a t are Christ’s a t h is coming.” When P au l said th a t, he had ju st been discussing those who had already “ fallen asleep in Christ.” And he said th a t th e ir resu rrection was still in th e future, to be accomplished when Christ came again.
