of our Lord Jesus to th is earth , and th e raising of human, bodies from th e dead. But prophecy and the resu rrection are as inviolable as th e person and th e ch aracter of God Himself. Redemption requires resu rrection ; and we have a gracious Redeemer who has not kep t us in the d ark con cerning His purposes, b u t has revealed them , from Genesis to Revelation, in “th e faith which was once for all deliv ered unto the sain ts.” These hum an bodies of ours are corruptible, th e seeds o f death being born in them from th e moment of our concep tion. “The wages of sin is death,” and “ all have sinned, and come sho rt of the glory of God.” W ere th ere no sin, th ere would be no death. B u t “ by one man sin entered Into- th e world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon a ll men, for th a t all have sinned.” The first death, which includes th e death of the body, is ju st as much a p a rt o f th e wages of sin as the second death, or th e death of both body and sp irit in th e lake of fire. It is th e devil who, by God’s perm ission, has th e power of death (Heb. 2 :1 4 ). Our Lord Jesus came to “ destroy the- works of th e devil,” and He claims to be “ able also to save them to the u tterm o st th a t come unto God by H im .” Is Christ an u tterm o st Saviour? Is He able to destroy a ll the works of th e devil? Then th is corruptible, death-destroyed body of th e believer who has really tru sted Christ m u st b e raised from th e dead. The power of Satan, and th e consequences of sin, in body, as well as in spirit, must be done away. And Christ is going to do it for all who believe. God raised His dead body from the dead, making it alive again, in order th a t “ so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfru its; afte r w ard they th a t are Christ’s a t his coming” (1 Cor. 15:22, 23). If our bodies were no t to be raised from the dead, th en for all etern ity Satan in the lake of fire could declare his defeat of Christ; and Christ would have been proved unable to undo th a t which sin and Satan had done In the bodies of those who had comm itted themselves in faith to Christ. T h at is why P au l declares th a t “ if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.” When our Lord declared to P eter, who had ju s t said “Thou a rt the Christ, th e Son of th e living God,” th a t "upon th is rock I will build my church; and th e gates of hades shall no t prevail again st it,” he was declaring th a t death should not forever hold the bodies of th e members of His tru e church. This declaration of our Lord was simply another prom ise of bodily resu rrection to all members of th e tru e church of Christ, which is th e body of Christ. Hades, the place of death, must hold fo r a tim e th e bodies of those believers who have died, un til Christ comes again. Then those death-gates shall n o t prevail, b u t shall be b u rst open in the triumph- of our retu rn in g Lord, even as those same gates of th a t same death were b u rst open on th e th ird day when our Lord H imself was raised from the dead. Let us praise God for the “sure word of prophecy; where- unto ye do well th a t ye ta k e heed, as unto a ligh t th a t shineth in a dark place, u n til th e day dawn, and th e day sta r arise in your h earts: knowing th is first, th a t no prophecy of th e scripture is of any private in terp retation . F o r th e prophecy came no t in old tim e by th e will of man: bu t holy men of God spake as they were moved by th e Holy Ghost” (2 Pet. 1:19-21).
