Give your outdoor space some love this summer and make it as visually inviting as your interior, with these inspiring yet simple tricks GARDEN Paint Ideas
BE BOLD WITH PAINT COLOUR
Safe neutrals have been the norm in gardens for some time now but post- pandemic we are seeing a definite shift towards becoming a bit more adventurous with colour, with many of us wanting to embrace a bolder palette. If you're feeling tempted to use stronger shades but are unsure about trying them on larger areas, like your decking, fence or shed, try restricting your painting to smaller areas like furniture and planters. This way you can enjoy a chosen colour on a scale that suits you. Just a few pieces of painted furniture can really brighten up and enliven any space dramatically. Get the look This ten-year-old metal bistro set has been given a new lease of life with a rub down followed by a coat of sunny-hued paint. The colour is California Gold in Sadolin Superdec Satin. Adding a splash of colour to surfaces like patio furniture, fences, garden sheds and tubs is so easy with this multi surface, self-priming formula.

Painted pots will add interest Lift lacklustre decking by working in extra colourful areas using planters as focal points. Simply sand the surface to remove any rough spots and wipe down with a damp cloth letting it fully dry before painting. The colour here is Sadolin Superdec Satin in Murphy Tree.
Try an easy container update Choose from a myriad of colours to transform a simple wooden crate into an attractive planter. We love this portable crate which has been upcyled with castors for versatility. The colours are Sadolin Superdec Satin Light Green (the crate) with pots in Rose Smoke, Murphy Tree and Summer Teal.

Think outside the box Brightly painted wooden flower boxes attract the eyes, so pimp up your patio and utilise them liberally. From outside shelves to blanket holders, they can also be used as low tables to set down a cool or hot drink in the shade.
Deck out the table It's time to give weather-worn wood a cheery coat of paint and set the table outside for gatherings again. Make a colourful statement by using several shades in a similar palette to create an eclectic look.

SWEET RETREAT When planning your paint projects consider creating areas of privacy where you can see yourself taking a perch in the sun to read, write or even get some quiet work done. You can then have other easy areas to socialise and sit outside with friends and family. Go for focal point furniture, such as a pretty shed, that will lead your eye down the garden. Get the look Soft lilacs, peaches and sea greens look gorgeous when paired with accent mustards and neutrals. The shed is painted in Grey Light with the chair in Blancmange. The pots are in Lavender Stone, Turnstile and Lapis Lazuli. The trug is in Butterscotch. All colours are from the Sadolin Superdec Satin range Paint colours below: Ripple Grey, Summer Teal, Sandside, Peachy Punch, Violet Hour, Bobby Dazzler, Brandy Alexander, Positivity and Tatlow Green, all from the Sadolin Superdec Satin colour range
Lean into pastels Create a lovely ambiance outside with an informal area in the garden to sit, chat, eat or play family games. The colours used to give this furniture a vintage summer feel are: Blancmange, for the chair, Tatlow Green, for the bench, and Grey Light for the fence, all from the range at Sadolin Superdec Satin.

Embrace simple settings Grab the opportunity to enjoy al fresco living. Whether you have a country garden or a bijou urban balcony, we all need a seat to soak up the sun. Pale shades look great in the summer light – think of them as neutrals with added interest.
Get ready to gather round Once you have given your table and chairs a bit of TLC, make sure you have the accessories on hand to create a pretty display. Fresh blooms, laid-back linens and other cheerful touches will work a treat.

How to Give your outdoors a Moroccan makeover Update furniture in vibrant pink hues and then add in a fringed parasol and potted plants. Layer it all up with cushions and throws. Here’s how… ● Start by dusting down furniture to remove any loose dirt and cobwebs. Next, scrub clean with a brush (not a wire one) to remove any green, algae or paint flakes, if previously painted. “It’s a good idea to make any repairs at this stage; plug holes, tighten screws, etc,” says Cathy. ● Pick a paint colour. “The furniture I had was originally painted but it’s always advised to do a patch test first, especially on stained or oiled woodwork,” says Cathy. “I’ve used Sandtex Exterior Satin in Brandy Wine (from Crown’s Moodboards x House and Home magazine collection) on the seating and Flaxmill (Crown Moodboards x House and Home magazine collection) for the table.” ● Apply at least two coats of paint, using a roller if possible so that you can avoid seeing brush strokes. “I choose a satin finish as it’s easier to clean, more resistant to scuffs and more hardwearing. It also gives the furniture a nice smooth lift” says Cathy. ● Accessorising is key to this look. “Add rugs underfoot and cosy up seating with cushions and throws in a mix of comforting textures and create atmosphere with layered lighting,” says Cathy.

How to Revive a tired garden shed
Make it work
Sadolin woodstains can be mixed to a huge range of colours. For a stand-out look pick a shade that reflects your personality ● Check the condition of the shed first before painting. Any traces of mould, algae or green on the timber must be treated and cleaned off. “We added a new corrugated roof, replaced rotting timbers and treated remaining panels with a wood hardener. We also used a wood filler to plug holes and knots,” says Saara. ● Using a roller, apply two coats of Sadolin Superdec, allowing three to four hours drying time between each coat. “Superdec is incredibly durable, with 10 years proven durability against the elements, and is self-priming so doesn’t need an undercoat,” says Saara. “We choose a peachy pink shade (X0571D) which we had custom mixed.” ● If the shed has been previously oiled or painted, do a test area first to check for any adhesion issues. ● Complement the look by painting any surrounding fencing or decking. Clean first with warm water and a mild detergent and allow to dry. “For the deck we used a purpley-pink Sadolin Beautiflex (RAL 4008) and offset it with a blue trim in Sadolin Beautiflex (RAL 5021) for added impact,” says Saara.

How to Update your PVCu front door
COLOUR PALETTE
Make it work
Give your home’s façade a new season glow-up and add instant kerb appeal by painting the front door – and surrounding masonry.
● “Getting your prep right is key to the success of this project,” says Bronagh. First remove hardware (letterbox, handle, etc), then clean and degrease the door using sugar soap. Lightly sand with a fine grade paper (180 grit) to provide a key for the paint and wipe clean. ● Using a brush apply a thin coat of Crown Trade PX4 Primer and allow to dry for 24 hours. “I always do a scratch test with my thumbnail to make doubly sure. If it comes off easily, it’s not dry,” says Bronagh. Top with a coat of Crown Trade Fast Flow Quick Dry Undercoat. ● Next apply two to three coats of Fast Flow Quick Dry Satin, Mustard Jar (Crown Moodboards Collection) allowing two to three hours drying between each coat. “Try using a roller for a smooth spray paint finish,” says Bronagh. ● If exterior walls can be painted, power hose first to remove any dirt then prep with Sandtex Fungicidal Wash. Using Sandtex X-Treme X-Posure Masonry Paint (Blue Black) apply two coats with a roller, allowing three to four hours between each coat. The windowsills are painted in Seldom Seen, from the Crown moodboards collection.

EXPERT ADVICE
Your DIY dilemmas and painting problems answered with a little help from our experts ASK THE Experts
QA &
Q I would love to repurpose my garden shed as a fun, colourful ‘she shed’ for crafting. What sort of paint should I use? A “I would recommend Sadolin Superdec. It’s a self-priming, self-levelling water-based paint and can be used on a number of different substrates including wood (with the exception of decking) metal and concrete,” says Derek. “Plus, it’s highly durable, resistant to cracking, peeling and flaking and comes in a choice of 300 colours,” adds Sean. “It can also be applied to both new or previously painted or stained surfaces. For a stand-out shed consider colours like Cocktail time, Violet Hour or Pressed Fuschia.”

Q My timber decking is looking tired. Is there anything I can do to revive it? It gets a lot of sun, so I need a durable solution. A “If you’re looking to revive your deck’s natural timber grain I would suggest Sadolin Classic All Purpose Woodstain. It’s available in 13 ready-mixed wood shades but can also be mixed using our Colourmixing in-store service,” says Derek. “If you’re after a completely new look, why not go for a solid paint colour,” suggests Sean. “Sadolin Beautiflex, a solvent wood stain, works especially well on decking surfaces that have become severely weathered or uneven in appearance and comes in a wide variety of colours including greys, blues, greens and warm red browns."

Q My garden has a lot of hard landscaping with additional built-in concrete seating, planters and an outdoor kitchen area. I originally painted everything white but I’d like an update. What colour would you suggest? A “Vermont Grey is a warm, tactile colour with a mauve undertone which can be really accentuated depending on the weather. For an additional pop of colour, I really like and would recommend a feature colour like Cote dA’ zure, a rich teal which complements Vermont Grey beautifully,” says Sean. “For the best finish prep is the key. Be sure to treat any organic growth with Sandtex Fungicidal Solution, then clean thoroughly. Use a decking brush (never a wire brush) to remove any flaking paint and apply Sandtex Stablising Solution to any bare or powdery patches before painting. For best results I would always recommend two coats of paint, applying the second coat after three to four hours.” “For a pop of colour try a feature colour like Cote d’Azure” Sean Madden, Crown Product Champion
Q I’m planning a garden get- together with family now that Covid restrictions have eased and would love to give my wooden furniture a revamp. What’s the best paint for the job? A “Unless you pack away your garden furniture at the end of the season, those lovely wooden chairs and tables will take the brunt of the winter weather. To get them tip top for your party, I would suggest Sadolin Garden Furniture Stain and Protector, which comes in three wood shades: Golden Oak, Natural Cedar or Warm Teak,” says Derek. “Again Sadolin Superdec can also be used if you’re after a solid colour,” adds Sean. Whatever paint you choose, the key to the finish is in the preparation. “Surfaces should be clean, sound and dry,” says Derek. “If the wood is weathered, use a stiff bristle brush or sand back in the direction of the grain. Wipe off any residue with a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits and allow to evaporate fully. Consider too, treating the chair and table legs with quick dry wood preserver (prior to painting or staining) to prevent rot. Knots or holes can be covered up with a Sadolin wood filler and rusty screws and nails replaced with non-ferrous ones. Make sure to use a good quality synthetic brush or roller, if you don’t want to see any brush strokes.”

Q My garden is small and quite shaded. I’d love to paint the fence to brighten it up. Is this an easy DIY job? What paint works best? A “Painting a garden fence is a fantastic way of injecting a splash of colour to a shaded garden and not difficult at all,” says Derek. “Sadolin has a fantastic range
of paints for exterior woods such as Shed & Fence paint which comes in eight fabulous shades or Quick Dry and Classic Woodstains which can be mixed to a wide range of colours. For a complete colour change, or to hide any blemishes, Superdec Satin is ideal. It can be mixed to practically any colour; your problem will be deciding which one to choose.”
